Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust

The Humane Society of the United States and The Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust are offering two separate $2,500 rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for illegally killing a moose and two pronghorns in mid-November in neighboring Burleigh and Morton counties. The HSUS offer adds to an existing reward of $1,000 from the Report All Poachers program.

According to the North Dakota Game and Fish Department and media sources, the illegal killings took place during the first week of deer gun hunting season. In Burleigh County, a young bull moose was shot near Moffit sometime between Nov. 11 and 18. In Morton County, two pronghorns, commonly known as antelope, were shot and left along a county road northwest of Mandan the weekend of Nov. 10.

?Poaching is a serious crime and I implore anyone with information to come forward,? said Karen Thunshelle, North Dakota state director for The Humane Society of the United States

The Investigation:

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Report All Poachers hotline at 1-800-472-2121 or their local game warden.

Poaching:

  • Wildlife officials estimate that nationwide, tens of millions of animals are poached annually.
  • It is estimated that only 1 percent to 5 percent of poached animals come to the attention of law enforcement.
  • Poachers injure or kill wildlife anytime, anywhere and sometimes do so in particularly cruel ways. Wildlife officials report that poachers often commit other crimes as well.
  • The HSUS and HSWLT work with state and federal wildlife agencies to offer rewards of $2,500 for information leading to arrest and conviction of suspected poachers.

The HSUS and HSWLT work to stop poaching across the country. Visit humanesociety.org/poaching for more information.
