Hillary Clinton Sets Diplomatic Milestone

After touching down in Riga, the capital of Latvia, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton set a record by visiting her 100th country as America's top diplomat.

The previous record for any other secretary was 96. Clinton has also visited 22 other countries prior to her cabinet post, making her career tally 122!

Since 2009, Clinton has completed 70 trips, spent 337 days on the road and more than 73 days on the plane, equaling over 1,750 hours, her staff says.

Hope they have a good data plan for all those texts from Hillary!

With media attention focused on politics at home, especially after the Supreme Court health care ruling, Clinton continues to travel (and run) the world.

Dressed in a navy suit, Clinton seemed unfazed by the mileage as she shook hands with Latvian President Andris Berzins at Riga Castle this week.

"I wanted to save a very consequential number for Latvia!" she said proudly ... before heading off to Finland, Latvia and Russia within 24 hours.

Here are the 100 countries the Secretary of State, the frontrunner for the 2016 Democratic nomination if she decides to run, has traveled ...

Don't Discuss Your Legal Issues Online - Law Offices of Thomas ...

I often come across forums and other websites where an individual having some legal trouble is relaying the details of that trouble to the public via the internet. And because it may not occur to people why this is a bad idea, here are some of the reasons.

Confidentiality and Privilege ? What you tell your lawyer is completely confidential and privileged under the eyes of the law. Your lawyer can?t tell anyone, and he or she also wouldn?t want to in most cases. Your lawyer is your partner in defending your case, and will know what information not to release and what information might be shared. But if you release that information to the public in a public forum like a website, that information is no longer protected. That means you cannot later claim the information was told in confidence to your lawyer, because it wasn?t. You also told the world online.

Working for the Prosecution ? Many prosecutors have caught on to the phenomenon of the internet, and they will run a quick search on you or your case to find anything of use to the case. You may not think you put something important on that webpage, but you may very well have. And even if it wasn?t damning evidence, if you and your lawyer decide to make a different argument in court, the fact that you argued something else as your excuse on a website will be damning evidence against you.

In general, it is important to tell everyone as little as possible about your case, with the exception being your lawyer. Additionally, you never know who is giving you advice online. A respectable attorney would not be on a forum advising people for free without the entire story, would they?

This information is not intended as legal advice.

Home health care - Why Should You Hire Home Care Services for ...

Seniors or elders need proper health care and assistance in their daily activities. If you have elders in your family who want to spend their remaining times in their own homes, you need to think of professional assistance, as you may not have enough time to provide them with that extra care in this hectic life. There is a wide range of home care services adequate to meet the growing needs of your senior parents. You do not have to worry about father taking to the hospital, giving him medicines or assisting him in any other activity. With in -home care services, you can be relieved of the burdens of taking care of your parents, while making retirement years more enjoyable for them.

Studies show that parents can live a better life in their retirement years at their own homes. They are less vulnerable to a variety of diseases like stress, depression, high blood pressure and heart attack. Your parents feel happy, as they are able to see or chat with their loved ones. They feel respectable when they are assisted in their daily activities by professional caregivers. Home care services are available for 24 hours. They comprise almost everything right from providing companionship, supervising diet and eating, giving medication reminders, assisting with getting up and into the bed, taking seniors to doctor to stimulating mental awareness to chatting in a friendly way. They also involve maintaining calendars, arranging appointments, serving food, and organizing mails and letter-writing services for elders.

Home care service providers also help seniors in selecting clothing, reading, and travel arrangements. With senior care service, you can be assured that your parents enjoy life once more and engage in hobbies and crafts, watch movies, and read books they love. These services even can include taking seniors to old friend's homes and taking them out for a meal or for a trip. Housekeeping can be a tough job for seniors, but the efficient home care services ensure that your elder's home is kept in order through cleaning, washing and ironing, dusting, bed making, vacuuming and taking the rubbish out.

Tips for Selecting a Home Care Service Provider

While selecting home care services, you need to interview at least 3 to 5 senior care providers to determine whether a person is fit for the job or not. It would be better if you involve your seniors in the interview. Be very specific about the tasks that you require a caregiver to do. Make sure you hire the person who is comfortable doing those tasks. Checking references from two or more sources is very helpful to know about credibility of a service provider. Check the background of your service provider and make sure they offer quality services within budget. For more details on home care, visit internet.

How to Start an Online Business | Concepts News

Learn how to get your business online.

More and more people are turning to the internet to start an online business. The following topics can guide you on how to start, manage and market a lucrative way to sell goods and services.

Business Savvy Basics

Prepare a business plan. Basic business rules apply to all businesses, and learn and follow the rules for complying with online federal, state and local business regulations, registering a domain name, the selection of web hosting, web designing and web marketing and understanding international trade laws. Use the following tools and resources on this page to guide you.

Register Your Domain Name

Choosing and registering a website domain name is the first step in establishing an online business. The domain name is your web address. The process is simple, inexpensive and vital to your business. After you selected your name(s) you would like to register, you may select from any number of individual businesses on the internet that handle web hosting and registrations. You may opt to register several names, to avoid competitors that will try to confuse browsers, and take away from your business. You need only use one domain as your web address, but by registering other names of variant spelling, and similarity, they are essentially off the market. Here are a few affiliate links to reputable companies that we have purchased from:

?

?

?

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is the non-profit corporation that has technical oversight of Internet protocol address space allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system management, and root server system management functions. It provides current news on issues surrounding domain names.

Selecting a Web Host

The web hosting service may be selected at the same time as registering your domain name(s). A web host will provide you with space, support and maintenance of your website as well as creation help if you desire. You may use your own web designers. Again, there are many options and organizations that perform these services and it would be wise to do thorough due diligence in selecting one. You want one that is reliable and secure. This website is currently hosted with bluehost.com (affiliate link).

Design Your Website

You may design your own if you have the expertise, or hire the website designer of your choice. The website is your online store front and its ?curb appeal? is as important to your success as a physical location. The uniform resource locator (URL) of your website is now your business address. Be sure to comply with U.S. trademark and intellectual property laws. The same laws and regulations apply to online businesses as regular businesses. Search for trademarks currently in use to avoid infringing on another company's rights on your website.

There are many freelancers available that can design and develop a website for you. Freelancers can be found on freelancing websites such as elance.com and getafreelancer.com

Begin Advertising and Marketing

As with all businesses, it will not be successful with good advertising and marketing to bring in customers. For online businesses, these customers come in the form of site visitors or viewers, otherwise known as ?traffic.?

Generating the highest amount of traffic possible on your website will create the highest chance that those visitors will become customers.

One of the ways to help improve your website's visibility is by conducting SEO (Search Engine Optimization). A faster, but more costly method of acquiring traffic is with SEM (Search Engine Marketing). SEM, most commonly associated with Pay-Per-Click advertising, can be done with search engines such as google.com and bing.com

Get Started Now!

Starting an online business takes time, serious effort and dedication. Once you see your website live, you'll feel a great sense of accomplishment. Don't wait to get started. Start right now!

Introducing: Ashley Taylor

This is a series of Q&As with young and up-and-coming science, health and environmental writers and reporters. They ? at least some of them ? have recently hatched in the Incubators (science writing programs at schools of journalism), have even more recently fledged (graduated), and are now making their mark as wonderful new voices explaining science to the public.

Today we introduce you to Ashley Taylor (blog, Twitter).

Hello, welcome to The SA Incubator. Let?s start from the beginning: where are you originally from?

I grew up in Bar Harbor, Maine, on a long hill with a cove at the bottom. My parents were scientists at the Jackson Lab, the mouse genetics institution that had brought them to Mount Desert Island in the first place. When I was entering 10th grade, my parents retired from the lab, and we all moved to Maceo (MAY-see-oh), Kentucky, to the 1832 family farm and farmhouse where my dad had grown up. I represent the fourth generation of Taylors who grew up (or at least spent some of childhood) on that farm, and my parents still live there, raising cattle (Dad) and tomatoes (Mom). I much prefer New York and Boston to Kentucky, but home is where the parents are to some extent.

How did you get into science and how did you get into writing? And how did these two trajectories fuse into becoming a science writer?

I can?t separate my career trajectory from my geographic one. I see Bar Harbor as a community where everyone is either an artist, a scientist?or one of the people who keep the world running for the artists and scientists. I grew up as an artist and was averse to science because it was what my parents did for a living. I played violin, studied ballet and filled notebooks with my writing. The adults in the community encouraged children to pursue the arts. That changed when I moved to Kentucky. I found that the English teachers didn?t care about writing at all. Papers came back months later with checkmarks, not comments. At the same time, I fell in love with biology. The science teachers at my new high school were really good. Biology, chemistry (and also French and Latin) replaced English as my favorite subjects. I decided that I wanted to be a scientist after all. (preferably in France). I read books from the ?science shelf? of my dad?s office, turned my notebooks toward mouse genetics, majored in biology in college, and had several great lab experiences. But my first experience working as a technician in a lab, where hardly anything I did worked, made me realize that what I?d done well in the lab as a student was analyze and write up my results. The data-gathering part was not for me. So I decided to write about science instead of doing it.

How do you find suitable stories to write about? What are your criteria?

Finding stories is the hardest part about science journalism for me. We are taught to look for stories that ?the average reader? will be interested in, and since I?m me, not the average reader, I find this difficult. My stories come from shoe-leather reporting (walking past a colony of stray cats, for example) and from seeing the science angle of stories from other beats (for example, a story about choreographer Merce Cunningham?s use of motion-capture technology). That?s also my way of assuring that my stories are unique. I don?t like sorting through the endless information online and trying to pick a needle, a good story, from the haystack. But I don?t ignore the haystack. I look for stories on EurekAlert and look for new angles in stories I read, say, in the Times, but then, I fear writing a story that has been done before. Balance is key. A story, or one?s take on it, has to be little-known in order to be news but it can?t be so little known that it?s obscure. It should be a story that few people have written about?but not because it?s not worth writing.

Why did you decide to attend a specialized science/health/environmental writing program instead of a generalized journalism or writing program, or just starting a blog and hoping to break into the science writing business?

I spent a few years writing part time and trying to break into the worlds of journalism, then science journalism, but I succeeded only at breaking into graduate school. I was in the Boston area at the time. On the journalism side, I took a course at Harvard Extension School and contributed articles to my local newspaper, The Somerville News, where I had fun covering Board of Aldermen meetings and all the issues?development, education, budgets?that those meetings represented. I also bombarded literary magazines with my personal essays to no professional success (a local writer?s group did publish some of my stuff). On the science side, I wrote science-related stories at the local paper when I could, spent some time writing voice-over narration for Journal of Visualized Experiments, and applied for a staff writer job at a research institution. Instead of getting the job, I got into graduate school at New York University?s Science, Health and Environmental Reporting Program (SHERP).

Apart from writing, do you also do other aspects of science communication, e.g., podcasts, video, art/illustration, photography, infographics, or do you do any coding, web design and programming?

At SHERP, I?ve learned to shoot and edit video and know the basics of making podcasts. In a data journalism class this summer, I?m learning how to make webpages and smart, data-filled graphics to display on them.

Which article of yours is your favorite and why?

My favorite article of mine is one I wrote about a colony of stray cats in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and the people who take care of them. The assignment was to write a profile related to an environmental issue, and my idea was that describing the life of a cat that lived outside would be a unique perspective on the urban environment. In ?Guernsey of Bergen Street,? I tried to imitate a New Yorker feature, telling the story completely through scenes I witnessed. Some say that the article does not give enough context, that its focus is too narrow. I chose a narrow focus because that was the level at which I could do the best descriptive writing and the level at which I could get information that a story researched online would lack. Maybe this story does not reach the happy medium between first-hand experience and fact, but it?s an earnest attempt.

What are your plans for the future?

Make a living as a journalist, something subject, of course, to who will pay me to write what. I enjoy writing about almost any topic, so I can see myself working for a newspaper, magazine or scientific institution.

What professional experience you have had so far ??publications, internships, jobs? Feel free to include a bunch of links here! What is your current job?

For two years, I was a staff writer for The Somerville News, a local weekly newspaper in Massachusetts. I also wrote voice-over scripts for the Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE). I?m currently working as a science-writing intern in the communications department at the American Museum of Natural History. I publish my work on Scienceline, SHERP?s science news site, and I?ve had a personal essay published at Talking Writing.

How do you see the current and future science media ecosystem, how it differs from the past, and what role will new, young science communicators like yourself play in building it and making it the best it can be?

As one of my professors, Christine Gorman, has been saying, knowing the five W?s of a story has lost value now that such information gets out onto the internet, via Twitter and other social-media sites. Information is less valuable now because the internet and phones allow people to both spread and access it easily and for free. There are also an endless number of possible stories to write (where sometime in the past, one?s stories might be limited to information one could gather on foot). The age of internet media requires journalists to pick out the most important stories from a sea of information and to say not just what happened but something original about what it means. It?s a challenge. I think young science journalists (and readers, too) can help the field by Tweeting (Twitter) and ?Liking? (Facebook) good stories to make them stand out.

I think it?s important to try to stay down-to-Earth even if one can travel anywhere on the worldwide web. Though the five Ws may get out quickly on Twitter, nobody can scoop a journalist on a one-time event covered by one reporter in person, even if that event is just a morning in lab with a researcher. The internet makes the reporting of facts less valuable, yes, but it makes the reporting of unique experiences more valuable. One could argue that the internet has also fostered a proliferation of unique experiences, blogs, which cheapen first-hand reporting. Yet in the world of news, I think that a story that has that perfect combination of fact and first-hand experience is more valuable these days. Whether or not it?s more or less valuable than it once was, it?s still what I strive for.

Do you write a personal or science blog ? How much do you use social media networks, e.g., Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, Tumblr, Pinterest, Flickr, YouTube etc., to promote your own and your friends? work, to learn and to connect?

I write a personal blog, Crenshaw Seeds, which is an outlet for my writing on topics I?m passionate about, from dance to music to ways of life and stabs at the deep questions that one can never answer deeply enough.

I do use social media to promote my work, and I find that Facebook links are the best way to bring people to my writing. Still, I can?t help feeling a bit selfish for using Facebook, a site ostensibly about keeping in touch with friends, as a way to promote myself, especially when I neglect the friendship side of it. I do it anyway, but I can?t shake the feeling of guilt.

This adds to a previous question about the ?media ecosystem.??Part of what we young journalists (and everyone who uses social media sites) have to figure out is what we feel is an acceptable level of self promotion, an acceptable online presence. We have to square with our online selves, selves which, like it or not, can be much more stylized than the in-person versions. It?s important to feel comfortable with one?s online presence and feel that it?s honest, no matter how much or how little it delves into one?s personal life.

Russia says Iran should be part of Syria summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Iran should be invited to an international meeting on the Syria conflict in Geneva at the weekend.

But the United States swiftly rejected the Russian proposal.

"It is better to involve Iran in the settlement (of the Syrian crisis)," Putin told a news conference following talks with Jordan's King Abdullah II on the shores of the Dead Sea.

"In any case it would complicate the process (if Iran is ignored)."

Wrapping up a one-day visit to Jordan, on a Middle East tour that had already taken him to Israel and the West Bank, Putin said Iran's support is needed.

"The more Syria's neighbours are involved in the settlement process the better. Ignoring these possibilities, these interests would be counterproductive, as diplomats say," he added.

"It is better to secure its support," said Putin.

The United States said, meanwhile, that it was increasingly likely to join the international meeting on the Syria crisis but rejected Russian calls for Iran to take part.

"We are getting closer but we don't have any decisions yet," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters in Washington.

But concerning Iran she added: "Given its support for the regime and its continued behavior vis-a-vis Syria, we just don't see it as able to make a helpful contribution right now."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov earlier told reporters in Jordan that Iran should be invited to Saturday's meeting in Geneva.

"It should certainly be done," he said, adding that he would take part in the summit.

If Iran is not invited "then all those who can really influence all the main Syrian sides will not be present," he said.

UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan, who wants to gather the major powers in Geneva in a final bid to get agreement on a political transition plan for Syria, has yet to officially announce the meeting.

But Lavrov said he would still go, even if Iran is not invited.

"I will go. But in that case we will simply be talking about how to further gather together all the participants who are necessary in order to use this chance because there is no guarantee it will be crowned with success," he added.

"But this chance has to be used. For this to happen you need to gather all those who have real influence on the situation. Iran is no doubt one of them."

"One needs to agree to influence all Syrian sides so that they themselves sit down at the negotiating table and begin to get along and look for consensus solutions," he said.

"Only they themselves can find agreement, and outside players can help them get together."

It is not still clear if Britain, France and China -- the other three permanent members of the UN Security Council along with Russia and the United States -- will attend the Geneva meeting.

In Jordan, Putin opened a guesthouse for Christian pilgrims at Baptism site in the Jordan Valley, where many Christians believe Jesus was baptised.

He arrived in Jordan from the West Bank, where he met Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas during a brief visit to Bethlehem, a day after talks in Israel with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres.

"I did not set myself a task to negotiate a personal meeting between the two leaders, but I am under the impression that agreement is possible," between Israel and the Palestinian leaders, Putin said in Jordan.

The peacemaking Quartet, which groups Russia, the United States, the European Union and the United Nations, has been trying to nudge the two sides back to direct talks, on hold since late 2010.

But little progress has been made, as the Palestinians insist on a settlement freeze before talks resume, while Israel calls for new discussions without preconditions.

During his visit to Israel, his first since returning to the Kremlin for a historic third term in May, Putin was urged to act on Iran's controversial nuclear programme.

"The Iranian problem is not a simple one but still I proceed from the fact that it can and should be solved through absolutely peaceful means, by way of a negotiation process and on the basis of respect of the right of the Iranian people to the peaceful use of energy," Putin told reporters.

"With absolute guarantees provided to the world community that the realisation of this programme would not lead to the emergence of nuclear weapons in this country and will not facilitate the nuclear proliferation in the world."

The international community has been pursuing talks with Tehran, but three high-level meetings -- the most recent in Moscow -- have failed to produce any breakthrough.

Xbox Surface: Is this Microsoft's new tablet?

12 hrs.

Posting from Hollywood: New details have emerged about an Xbox-branded Microsoft tablet in advance of a mystery news conference planned by the company for this afternoon.

Microsoft news blog LiveSide.net has details on a Microsoft tablet called Xbox Surface, some of them via?the site Shifted2U.com. They come in the form of?a very legitimate-looking spec sheet ? revealing a 7-inch screen?with a 1280 x 720 resolution, SD card support, and a speedy 3.1 GHz processor, which sounds like it would be more of a battery hog than the chips used in existing tablet computers.

Mary Jo Foley notes that Xbox Surface could be linked to the Xbox SmartGlass project, unveiled at E3, a plan by Microsoft to connect Xbox Live to apps on Android, iPhone and Windows Phone. As we reported in the past, the trademark filing for SmartGlass referred to both hardware and software.

Whether this is the tablet that Microsoft is revealing this afternoon isn?t clear.?At this point we don?t know officially if Microsoft is actually revealing a new tablet today.?But we won?t have to wait long now to find out.

After traveling from Seattle this morning, I hitched a ride from the airport?with Wilson Rothman of msnbc.com and we?ve made our way?L.A. to the site of Microsoft?s mystery event in Hollywood this afternoon, at Milk Studios.

An initial?drive-by of the location didn?t reveal?any?secrets. Crews are busy loading audio and staging equipment through the rear entrance.

Stay tuned for live coverage from the event this afternoon. The doors open at 3:30 p.m., but no word yet on when the event actually gets going.

Egypt Islamists claim presidency as army tightens grip

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's agonised passage from revolution to democracy was in limbo on Monday, as the Muslim Brotherhood claimed victory in a presidential election while the generals who took over from Hosni Mubarak decreed it was they who would keep most power.

The former air force commander running against the Islamist dismissed Mohammed Morsy's self-declared triumph as a bid to "hijack" the election. Ahmed Shafik, who was also Mubarak's last prime minister, said that it was he in fact who was ahead.

As a day of counting, and mutual jibes over violations, wore on, there was no official word on how the two-day run-off went and electoral supervisors warned they may not publish any result until Thursday - prolonging what for many Egyptians has become a wearisome deadlock between a military past and religious future.

Shafik's camp insisted he led by two to four points but even sources in the army, which has fought the Brotherhood through six decades of military rule, indicated they were preparing to accept that Morsy had won Egypt's first free presidential vote.

Whoever emerges as president - and at least one electoral official privately endorsed Morsy's claim to be leading by 52 percent to 48 with the bulk of votes counted - he will find his powers tightly circumscribed by a decree issued by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi's military council as polls closed on Sunday.

Having last week dissolved the parliament that was elected in January with a thumping Islamist majority, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) said on Sunday it would now take back the assembly's legislative powers and could also step in to break a deadlock in drafting a new constitution.

Liberals and Islamists called it a "military coup".

"Military Transfers Power, to Military," ran the ironic headline in independent newspaper al-Masry al-Youm.

Tantawi, Mubarak's defence minister for 20 years, promised Egyptians who entrusted him with their revolutionary victory to hand power to civilians by July 1. That pledge, endorsed by the United States, the army's $1.3 billion-a-year sponsor, would be satisfied, a military council member said, with a ceremony to be held by June 30 to swear in the new civilian head of state.

Yet he will be a president who can only appoint a government whose every law must be endorsed by SCAF. A timetable set down for writing a constitution, passing it by referendum and then electing a parliament could leave Tantawi in charge until 2013.

The Brotherhood, however, expressed its joy and defiance on the streets and Morsy, a 60-year-old, U.S.-educated engineer who was a political prisoner under Mubarak, promised to be a leader of all Egyptians - a nod to the many, from Christians to secular liberals to moderate Muslims, who fear intolerant clerical rule.

"Thanks be to God who has guided Egypt's people to the path of freedom and democracy, uniting Egyptians for a better future," Morsy said in a victory speech to supporters in Cairo during which he forswore revenge or the settling of scores.

In a cameo moment that spoke of his lightning journey from obscure apparatchik to national celebrity - he was mocked as the party's "spare wheel" when a more senior figure was barred from the race in April - Morsy was caught on camera before his speech telling an aide to let his family know they would see him on TV.

ISLAMIC FUTURE

Hundreds of flag-waving supporters of the Brotherhood, whose members long suffered torture and death at the hands of the generals, gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square. It was there that the anti-Mubarak revolt was launched on January 25, 2011, mainly by secular young urbanites, later joined by the Brotherhood.

"Thank God, we have got rid of military rule and the police state," said Mona Issam, one of a group of cheering women clad in long robes and full-face veils. "We hope Morsy takes power from the military council and the army goes back to barracks.

"We lived like strangers in our land under the old regime. We were oppressed and Islam was not the law."

Hosni Qutb, a 45-year-old physician, derided Shafik as the "candidate of Israel", in reference to the military rulers' 33-year-old peace treaty with Egypt's Jewish neighbour. Israel fears growing hostility from Cairo and said an Israeli and two militants were killed in an attack on its border overnight.

However, the crowds hardly attracted notice in the morning rush hour and measured barely a drop compared with the human sea that engulfed central Cairo on February 11 last year when Mubarak fell, pushed aside by generals fearful of losing their own privileges.

Morsy attracted support from many who reject his religious agenda and the imposition of Islamic law but wanted to bar the way to Shafik, 70, whom they see as the heir to the old regime.

As Islamists celebrated, unemployed Mohamed Mahmoud, 28, did not share their joy: "I voted for Morsy but I can't say I'm happy," he said. "I'm still afraid of both and what they may do.

"I don't want an Islamic state or a new Mubarak state."

Political chaos has ravaged a vital tourist trade focused on pyramids and Red Sea beaches and the latest turn of events, by prolonging uncertainty, may further harm the economy. The main stock market index fell 3.4 percent to a five-month low.

"How can you possibly make these huge economic decisions in such circumstances?" says Gabriel Sterne, an economist at London investment banking house Exotix. "Such events as these only serve to undermine confidence and accelerate capital flight."

"SETBACK FOR DEMOCRACY"

The military council's "constitutional declaration", issued under powers it took for itself last year, was a blow to democracy, said many who aired their grievances on social media.

"Grave setback for democracy and revolution," tweeted former U.N. diplomat and Nobel peace laureate Mohamed ElBaradei.

"This decree just makes plain the hegemony of SCAF," said Khaled Ali, an activist lawyer who was eliminated in the first round of presidential voting despite a strong, youthful following. "This decree strips the president of the powers he was elected to have and gives those to the military council, whose members were appointed by the old regime," he said.

The order indicated that the army, which controls swathes of Egypt's economy, has no intention of handing substantial power to its old Islamist adversary and may be hoping that public disillusion with the Brotherhood's performance will reduce its influence on the new constitution and the next parliament.

The Brotherhood has contested the army's power to dissolve the present parliament. It warned of "dangerous days" ahead. But few expect the Islamists, who were not in the vanguard of the revolt and spent much of the past year in uneasy symbiosis with the army, to launch a violent grab for power any time soon.

"This is the beginning of a very tough path," a senior Brotherhood official, Essam el-Haddad told Reuters, "The beginning of it is dealing with the amended constitutional declaration that strips the president of any real powers."

The failure of the new parliament to agree a consensus body to draft a constitution - liberals accuse the Islamists of packing the panel with religious zealots - has left Egyptians picking their way from revolution to democracy through a legal maze while the generals control the map and change it at will.

Under the latest order, writing of the new constitution may pass to a body appointed by the SCAF - if a court rules against the contested panel nominated by the now defunct legislature.

Any new constitution would need approval in a referendum, with a new parliamentary election following. By a timetable contained in the decree, it would take another five months or so to complete the planned "transition to democracy".

However, the experience of the past year has left many Egyptians doubting that the military, and what they call the "deep state" stretching across big business, Mubarak-era judges, security officials and the army, will ever hand over control.

"The military has more power now than it had over the past year and more control over events now that parliament is dissolved," said Said Hirsh, an economist at Capital Economics in London. "The new president will not be able to do much.

"SCAF isn't going to transfer any real power," Marc Lynch, a Middle East expert at George Washington University said on Twitter of the constitutional order. "Back to the beginning."

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 caught on video bearing Telcel wallpaper

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is rightly so an interesting, and anticipated device. First shown off at Mobile World Congress back in February, we thought the launch was getting closer only to be told that Amazon made a boo-boo. There is though a new, unofficial, video out there on the interwebs, of the Note 10.1 bearing a Telcel wallpaper. If nothing else on that front, it gives a bit of a clue as to one place it'll be heading when it eventually is released.

It's a pretty detailed video, and we won't spoil it for you. All the text is -- expectedly being Telcel anyway -- in Spanish, but reading isn't really necessary. The one spoiler we will throw in, is that at one point in the video, there is clearly a phone dialer on the screen. Absolutely enormous phone anyone?

LTE arrives in Colombia, stays for the coffee

LTE arrives in Colombia, stays for the coffee

Citizens of Colombia have yet another reason to be proud this week, as LTE connectivity is now part of the nation's infrastructure. State-owned telecom UNE EPM has officially flipped the 4G switch for Bogota and Medelin, and plans to bring similar LTE services to residents of Cali, Barranquilla, Cartagena and Bucaramanga in the near future. If all goes well, UNE EPM hopes to provide LTE coverage for 90% of Colombia's population by year's end. The carrier is now offering both 6GB and 12GB data packages to its post-paid subscribers starting at $89,900 COP ($50 USD) per month, which include data caps of 10Mbps. Meanwhile, prepaid users may choose between 1.2GB, 4GB and 8GB of data usage. Full PR follows the break, though you'll have to excuse the computer translation.

[Thanks, Paul]

Samsung confirms all Canadian Galaxy S III models will include 50GB Dropbox promotion

Dropbox on the Galaxy S III

In a statement to the fine folks at MobileSyrup, Samsung has verified that all Canadian models of the Galaxy S III will include free (for two years) an extra 48GB Dropbox storage

New GS III users will receive a basic 2GB of free space with Dropbox (It is permanent). When they create their own Dropbox account or link their existing account to Samsung Apps, the user will receive 48GB more space through a promotional offer, for a total of 50GB. This is available for 2yrs.

This leaves us with two questions -- what happens to your files at the end of two years if you decide not to continue the 50GB plan, and why Verizon and AT&T decided against it. We can guess at the answer to the first -- you'll likely be given a grace period to get anything from the cloud you want to keep before you lose 48GB worth of your storage. Dropbox wants your love, and your money, and they know they won't get either if they delete your files willy-nilly.

The answer to the second part, well, that just escapes us.
