"scabies"I will never forget the time that our family had a case of scabies. If you think that lice or chicken pox are itchy then you haven?t had scabies. Scabies are tiny parasitic mites that get under a person?s skin. They spread quickly and are highly contagious. If your toddler comes home with scabies, you better treat him fast before the entire family is plagued with these unfriendly critters.

So how do you recognize scabies? Your toddler will have tiny red bumps or blisters that most of the time follow in a line. Your toddler will be scratching the area constantly with the itching becoming much worse at night and after a warm bath. Because there are so many illnesses that involve red bumps and itching (chicken pox, bug bites, and poison ivy), it is best to take your toddler to a pediatrician to confirm that the skin condition your toddler is suffering from is indeed scabies. A well-educated pharmacist may also be able to tell scabies by looking at your child?s skin, but you?ll need a prescription cream to get rid if them.

According to the Mayo Clinic, there are certain places that scabies love to hide on children. Typically, you can see them on your toddler?s scalp, face, neck, hands, and feet. Treatment is determined by the age of your child and anyone else in the home. Most pediatricians recommend treating the entire family. Permethrin is a good choice for the entire family, Crotamiton for children under the age of two, and Lindane for children over the age of two. Always follow your doctor?s orders when it comes to how much cream to use and how often.

Once you get your toddler on a treatment regimen, you will need to relieve your toddler of the uncontrollable itching associated with the scabies. Options include over-the-counter Benadryl, Calamine lotion, and cool washcloths. Always discuss these options with your pediatrician because drugs like Benadryl, while sold over-the-counter, interact with other medications in a negative way. For example, my daughter can?t take Benadryl because it interacts with her seizure medication.

Treating your toddler for scabies is only the first step. Next, you need to wash all of your toddlers clothing in hot water. Use the heat setting on your dryer as well. If your toddler has a favorite blanket or teddy bear, wash that too. Anything that can?t be washed should be bagged and set in an attic, basement, or garage for 30 days.
