5 Reasons Facebook Home is nothing to write home about (Guest Blog)

Facebook did some amazing pre-release PR for the Facebook Home launch. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg seemed to consider this launch important and pitched it to the media. Zuckerberg also acted in ads about the new Facebook Home.

Over the weekend I installed Facebook Home on my Samsung Galaxy S3 that runs on Android. Facebook had done some amazing pre-release PR for the Facebook Home launch. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg seemed to consider this launch important and pitched it to the media. Zuckerberg also acted in ads about the new Facebook Home and in general created a lot of hype, which of course raised everyone?s expectations.

I was frankly disappointed. Facebook Home is just a launcher. Android phones use a launcher that typically is the first thing that you will come into contact with when you switch on your phone. In my Samsung Galaxy S3, the native launcher is TouchWiz. I have experimented with a few other launchers for the Android, specially the GoLauncher and the ADW Launchers. I gave up on using a custom launcher because I felt they made my phone slow.

I installed Facebook Home with a lot of excitement and at the time this app had 100,000 downloads and had earned a 2.4 star rating (the highest rating is 5). The experience of being able to see your rich content directly on your home screen was great. I could easily scroll through the amazing photos that my friends constantly post, and like them easily with a double tap.

Using Facebook Home, the Facebook messages will crop up no matter which application you are using on your phone. But beyond this functionality, Facebook Home in its present form does not do much more. I would probably enjoy this when I am waiting in a doctor?s office and the magazines are too old to read. But here are five reasons Facebook Home is disappointing:

1. Some of the Facebook Home functionality should be part of the Facebook native Android app instead of taking over the home screen.
