It can be a challenge to assemble a comprehensive list of local camp options available in Maplewood and South Orange, if only because the choices seem nearly endless.
Patch has put together a round up of some of the best camps our two towns have to offer. No doubt, we have left off many wonderful choices. Please let us know in comments if there is something that people should know about.

TRADITIONAL CAMPS
The?South Mountain YMCA Camp?offers a large selection of camps for children ages 2 1/2 to 10th grade. Traditional camps: Mini YKnots, Y Knots, SOMAPY, Pre-Teen, Teen Adventure and Counselor-in-training. Plus specialty camps: Creative Dramatics, Environmental, Global Arts, Sports Galore and Golf. June 23 to August 17.?
Here's a closer look at just one specialty camp:?South Mountain YMCA Drama Camp is for children in grades 1-6.?Children progress from simpler choreography and scripts, to more advanced work throughout their journey in the years from Drama 1 to Drama 3. Campers will create their own costumes, props and scenery, and attend at least one theatre-oriented field trip or workshop. 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

South Orange - Maplewood Adult School?Children?s Summer Programs:?Over 100 classes in creative arts, music, sports, and enrichment for children entering Grades 1-12. Running July 1-26 at the South Orange Middle School, 70 N. Ridgewood Road, South Orange. Classes range from songwriting to TV production to sewing, and nearly everything in between, including sports camps offering baseball, track and field, fencing and much more.
Campers may choose individual classes or enroll for the full day. Additional care before and after the program is available. TOWN CAMPS:
The Baird?Summer Playground Program is a seven week, half-day, program for South Orange children who are 4 years of age through 8th grade. Children meet at the Meadowland Park/Cameron Field complex, program includes games, sports, music, art, swimming, special events and field trips.?Applications will be taken in person at The Baird? The Maplewood Recreation Department offers Kid's Kamp for ages K-5th grade, for Maplewood and South Orange residents. At Seth Boyden School for two 3-week sessions starting July 1. Swimming at Maplewood Community Pool, field trips and more. Half day, 8:30 am - 1 pm; Full Day, until 3:30 p.m. Bring lunch.
Also: Camp Maple, a six-week program for children with special needs. July 1 - Aug. 9, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. ?

ART AND ACTIVITY CAMPS

The Space Explorer program promotes critical thinking through active reading, effective writing, and inquiry learning. ?The program includes a series of challenges, missions and hands-on experiments for children to explore and solve collaboratively.?

CHURCH/SYNAGOGUE
Camp Prospect:?Is a?six-week program, held at Prospect Church in Maplewood from June 24-Aug. 2.?Camp is open to children ages three through five, who have completed a full year of preschool and children entering Kindergarten. Arts and crafts, music, theme days, pretend trips, special guests, outdoor games, water play and more. The camp is from 9:00-12:00 with an optional lunch program on Tuesdays and Thursdays.??
Camp Prospect?Seasons: Two weekly camp sessions from Aug. 12-16, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. for preschoolers and current Kindergarteners. Sign up for one or two weeks. Maplewood Ultimate Frisbee Camp: Fundamentals of Ultimate Frisbee during two one-week sessions in the middle of August. Aug 12 - Aug 16 (Session 1 - for students entering grades 7 through 10) Aug 19 to Aug 23 (Session 2 - for students entering grades 9 through 12). Sponsored by the Maplewood Recreation Department. Maplewood Karate Camp: Two four week sessions, closed the first week of July. Open to all skill levels. Karate for ages 4-6 and 7+, kickboxing for 7+.
Lydia Johnson Dance Camp:?July 9 ? 27, 2012.?Three weeks, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.?The Burgdorff Center, 10 Durand Road, Maplewood.?Explore Dance in depth this summer with professional dancers from New York. Under the direction of Choreographer Lydia Johnson, LJ Dance company members will lead small groups through a varied day of creative dance.
Maplewood Tennis?utilizes town courts. Class are open for peewees, groups and individuals.?
