Henderson Paris appointed deputy mayor

NEW GLASGOW ? New Glasgow Mayor Barrie MacMillan has announced the appointment of Coun. Henderson Paris as deputy mayor for the Town of New Glasgow.

This will be the second time Paris has served in the position for the town, having also served in 2008. Paris was first elected to New Glasgow town council in 2004, again in 2008 and was acclaimed in the 2012 municipal election to serve as one of two representatives for Ward 1.

Paris is a commissioner of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission, appointed in 2010. He is a recent recipient of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal, was the recipient of an honorary degree from the Nova Scotia Community College, Pictou Campus in 2011, received the Meritorious Service Medal from the Royal Canadian Legion in 2009 and selected New Glasgow?s Difference Maker for the 25th Anniversary of the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary of the Man in Motion Tour.

Founder the Run Against Racism held in Pictou County from 1990 to 2009, the newly appointed deputy mayor has received numerous provincial and national recognitions as a human rights activist and community leader.

?I look forward to this role with much anticipation and interest and recognize it is a very special appointment in the life of an elected municipal councillor,? Paris said. ?I greatly appreciate being given the opportunity to take on the duties of deputy mayor for my hometown.?
