Hot shoe adapter for Sony NEX-5 and NEX-5N gets the hands-on treatment
The Sony NEX-7 we reviewed last month is the only cam from the NEX line to include a hot shoe for attaching an external flash, but NEX Proshop just introduced an unofficial workaround for the NEX-5N and NEX-5, a hot shoe adapter that will ship for $79.99. Engadget Chinese got to handle a unit and gave it a spin on the NEX-5N. In addition to allowing for an external flash, the adapter lets you automatically sync with the internal one, with the recommended max shutter speed being 1/ 250s. Our sister site's hands-on version didn't allow for tightening the screw position with a coin, which resulted in the adapter coming a bit loose -- so perhaps this isn't the exact model that will ship. Demi Lovato Announces Summer Tour Dates
North American jaunt kicks off in June and wraps up at the beginning of September.

Demi Lovato is ready to give your heart a break on her just-announced summer tour. The Unbroken singer will take her act on the road beginning in June.
The trek will kick off on June 12 in California, before circling around the country for 21 dates with stops in Phoenix, Las Vegas, Boston and one stop in Toronto, Canada. The tour will run through the summer, wrapping up on September 1 in Salem, Oregon.
Lovato hit the road last fall to promote the album. That smaller Stateside tour was featured in her MTV documentary, "Stay Strong." She also recently completed a tour in South America. This time around, Lovato is expected to bring Hot Chelle Rae and Owl City with her.
"Skyscraper" just went platinum, celebrating sales of more than one million since its July release. She recently dropped the album's second single, "Give Your Heart a Break," as well as the music video earlier this month.
While Lovato has been open about her personal struggles, she didn't want this album to be exclusively about them. "I didn't want to come out with this depressing album. I think it's important that I kept a lot of my heart open on the album because I talked about my personal issues," she told MTV News. "But I also had some fun dance songs on there for people to enjoy."

'Fifty Shades Of Grey': What's In It For 'Hunger Games' Fans?
As the E.L. James novel bumps the dystopian drama from the top of the bestseller list, we ask a few of Panem's faithful if fans should give it a read.

Katniss Everdeen and her trusty bow and arrow can no longer fend off Christian Grey and his punishing whips — "Fifty Shades of Grey" has bumped "The Hunger Games" from its #1 perch on USA Today's bestseller list. And it's a contentious battle, to be sure. Seven of the top 10 are dominated by the various series installments by "Grey" author E.L. James and "Hunger Games" author Suzanne Collins.
It probably goes without saying that the content of these two sagas couldn't be more different: "The Hunger Games" is a teen novel chronicling a young heroine's fight for survival in a televised death match against 23 other kids, while "Fifty Shades of Grey" is an erotically charged page-turner detailing the sexcapades of a billionaire and his young paramour. Yet, both have managed to capture the attention of publishers, producers and pop-culture pundits.
While "The Hunger Games" was busy dominating the box office to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars, Universal Pictures and Focus Features (perhaps inspired by Lionsgate's success with the book-to-film adaptation) snatched up the film rights to James' buzzy novel for an undisclosed sum. A few weeks later, the English author was named to Time 's 100 Most Influential People in the World list.
Full disclosure: I've been hesitant to pick up "Fifty Shades of Grey" owning to its "Twilight" fanfic roots and "mommy porn" reputation, but as someone who writes about both books and films, I'll eventually need to become familiar with the life and times of Christian Grey — for purely professional reasons, of course. But is there anything in it for "Hunger Games" fans looking for another high-profile novel to devour? I asked a few of Panem's faithful.
"I haven't actually read 'Fifty Shades of Grey,' but I confess that way back in the day, when it was called 'Master of the Universe' and was posted for free online as 'Twilight' fan fiction, I did read it," said Hunger Games Examiner's Sara Gundell. "It is a dirty, dirty story — but hey, sometimes filthy fan fiction is fun to read. And while there is plenty of 'Hunger Games' fan fiction online (and plenty of it is also dirty), I'm not sure 'Fifty Shades of Grey' will appeal to most fans of 'The Hunger Games' based on what attracted them to that series. There isn't really any way to compare the two. They don't have similar themes, and the characters don't share any similar traits. They really are nothing alike. That doesn't mean some 'Hunger Games' fans won't enjoy it, but I can't see it having any sort of universal, crossover appeal. They just don't have anything in common, really."
For MTV News staffer Christina Garibaldi, the saucy series served as a palate cleanser after the death and destruction of the dystopian drama.
"As a reader of both 'The Hunger Games' and 'Fifty Shades of Grey,' I have to admit I'm a huge fan of both," she said. "Both stories have taken their audiences by storm, but keep in mind that 'Fifty Shades of Grey' does skew a little older and to women, while 'Hunger Games' seems to please both male and female readers. Yet, if you are anything like me and enjoy mixing up your reading between love stories and action novels, then pick up both books! You will not be disappointed."
Then there's The Hob's Megan Scott, who says she sees at least one (tongue firmly in cheek) similarity: hunger.
"I have been sucked into the 'Fifty Shades' vortex and am enjoying it immensely," she said. "Anything that is getting a lot of hype and is considered controversial I'll pick up. There really is nothing that really comes to mind that would intrigue an "HG" fan other than the common theme of hunger, but let's face it, Christian Grey's hunger is the different sort."
Consensus: While the two best-selling series share very little in common thematically, odds are in your favor that "Grey" may be as hard to put down as "The Hunger Games."

While accepting that some labeling may be unreliable and could be improved, consumers who want painted nails also should think about where they're having their nails done. Air quality inside a salon is important no matter how often patrons come in. It's even more important to the thousands of licensed manicurists -- 121,000 in California alone -- who may breathe chemical fumes 10 hours a day, seven days a week, said Liou, a public health administrator at Asian Health Services in Oakland, who is among advocates pressing for better ventilation to dissipate the concentrated chemical vapors.

Turkey states Syrian peace initiative dead after Syrian troops fire across border
Lebanon's government, dominated by the Shia Islamist group Hizbollah which is funded by the Assad regime, is unlikely to protest too vigorously, although the incident could prove destabilising in a country whose Sunni and Christian populations deeply resent Syrian influence.
Turkey, however, will prove much less malleable. One of the Assad regime's most implacable critics in the region, it has been vocal in its scepticism of a peace plan brokered by Kofi Annan, the UN and Arab League special envoy to Syria, that is meant to reach fruition this week.
Under the terms of the initiative, the Syrian government is meant to withdraw its troops and heavy weapons from cities and towns by today, with the rebels required to end all attacks when a full ceasefire is supposed to come into force 48 hours later.
But ever since Mr Annan announced that Syria had accepted the peace plan last Monday, the country has been convulsed by some of its worst bloodshed since the uprising against Mr Assad began a year ago.
Hundreds of people, mostly civilians but also soldiers and rebels, have been reportedly killed as government offensives launched a countrywide offensive to reclaim opposition-held territory.
More than 50 people were killed yesterday, opposition human rights groups said, including 30 civilians in an army artillery assault on al-Latmana, a town in the central province of Hama. Syrian helicopter gunships also attacked a nearby village.
A dozen soldiers were also killed in rebel attacks elsewhere in the country.
The violence of the past week has prompted a surge in the number of refugees fleeing into Turkey, which houses 25,000 Syrians in camps close to the border.
With a further 200,000 civilians displaced within Syria itself, Turkey fears the number of refugees will grow sharply despite the efforts of Mr Assad's troops to mine the borders.
In response to Turkish warnings that it will soon need international assistance, Mr Annan is due to tour some of the refugee camps today.
Turkey's deputy foreign minister, Naci Koru, said the visit would be used to make the point that the peace plan was effectively dead.
"April 10 has become void," Mr Koru said. "After Kofi Annan's visit tomorrow a new stage will start."
Turkey, which already provides sanctuary to rebel units, has previously proposed mounting a cross-border military incursion into Syria to create a buffer zone but so far has failed to win American support for the idea.
But what little leeway Mr Assad had with his Western detractors is dissipating fast after his government on Sunday backed away from its commitment to withdraw troops by Tuesday's deadline, saying it would only do so if it received a written pledge from the rebels that they would also disarm.
"Adding new conditions at this stage is totally unacceptable," Baroness Ashton, the European Union policy chief, said.
In a damning indictment that will reinforce Western outrage with the regime, Human Rights Watch said yesterday that it had documented the summary executions by pro-regime forces of at least 85 civilians, including women and children, and 16 captured rebel fighters since late 2011. The group said it believed hundreds more executions had also taken place.
"In a desperate attempt to crush the uprising, Syrian forces have executed people in cold blood, civilians and opposition fighters alike," said Ole Solvang, a researcher for the group. "They are doing it in broad daylight and in front of witnesses, evidently not concerned about any accountability for their crimes."
Amateur video footage released by opposition activists in Homs showed a man being kicked and beaten by suspected loyalist militiamen who set fire to his back before slicing open his throat with a knife. The provenance of the clip is unclear and its authenticity could not be established.

Sales director of Global Fine Foods, Naynesh Karia, explained: ?We spent a long time developing the product as we wanted to ensure the naan bread was absolutely right. If you don?t get naan bread right it can end up like a Frisbee after being microwaved!?
Naansters have been available since 2008 in an unbranded format through foodservice outlets such as cafes and colleges, and will also be sold unbranded at the London Olympics. However, in no doubt it could also make its mark as a retail brand, Naynesh said: ?This is not a fad. We truly believe this has the possibility to be the next big thing and is here to stay.?
