Resources for Human Development (RHD) www.rhd.org is a large and diverse nonprofit social service agency headquartered in Philadelphia, with 160 programs in 14 states. The mission of RHD is to provide caring, effective, efficient, and innovative services that support people to overcome obstacles and build meaningful lives for themselves, as well as strengthen relationships with their families, and the communities in which they live. Since 1970, RHD?s multi-faceted programs have served people with a variety of challenges, including developmental disabilities, mental illness, substance abuse, poverty, and homelessness. Mission

The Director ? Business Development & Social Innovation will take the lead in exploring and developing new service areas for RHD. This will include identifying and leading the early development of services, products, and technologies that are not currently part of RHD?s repertoire and moving current products and services to new markets, locally, regionally, and nationally in a way that leverages (with the collaboration of others) corporate experience and expertise. This position will be dedicated to identifying and exploring service areas and activities that RHD can develop into the future to sustain its continued growth and prosperity. The Director ? Business Development & Social Innovation will have a work schedule that allows for maximum freedom to explore areas of new opportunity for RHD through desk research, professional networking, travel to conferences and areas of the country or world that are promising sites for development, and other related activities.

Typical Tasks

1. Develop a familiarity with RHD?s corporate values, structure, services, financing, and history and develop relationships with key staff who will be critical to the undertaking of corporate activities in a new geographical or service area.

2. Leverage current contacts within government, foundations and related networks to support the identification of new channels and new opportunities for existing programs and services.

3. Explore future trends related to emerging social needs, populations, societal problems, and service technologies through a variety of media including journals, newspapers, Internet resources, and documentaries.

4. Attend conferences and workshops where future trends, issues, and problems are discussed and where innovative solutions or responses are proposed.

5. Communicate with experts in various fields and network with public and private sector professionals and decision makers to develop information, explore the feasibility of developing new services or engaging in new corporate activities, and familiarize people with RHD and its unique ability to develop innovative solutions to emerging problems and needs.

6. Communicate, both verbally and in writing, with key RHD personnel in order to further the development of new service areas and activities within the corporation. Facilitate internal and external meetings, focus groups and other idea generation processes.

7. Identify, hire, and manage consultants that have the specialized knowledge and skills necessary to facilitate RHD?s entry into new service areas.

Qualifications The successful candidate will:

1. Be a creative individual with the ability to connect seemingly disparate and/or unconnected subjects.

2. Have a demonstrated capacity to conduct research and utilize a variety of informational resources to identify future trends, issues, and problems.

3. Have the ability to effectively use a variety of information technologies.

4. Have strong interpersonal skills that will facilitate the development of effective relationships, often over long periods of time, with a wide variety of people that include entrepreneurs, business leaders, college professors, government officials, non-profit leaders, legislators and legislative aids, and human services clinical and direct care staff.

5. Be self-motivated, outgoing, friendly and persuasive. This person should be comfortable meeting new people, analytical in qualifying prospects and diligent in nurturing contacts.

6. Have the ability to travel extensively to a variety of places in order to attend conferences, network with appropriate individuals, manage consultant relationships, and coordinate the initial development of new RHD services and corporate activities.

7. Reside anywhere in the country but may be required to temporarily relocate for defined periods of time, based on the intensity of initial development or implementation work in a designated community.

8. Have superior verbal and writing skills.

9. Possess academic and experiential credentials that are relevant to this position, but minimally will have 10 years of relevant work experience.
