NEW WATERFORD ? The Cape Breton University Capers baseball team is becoming a dynasty.
The Capers won their fourth straight Atlantic conference title by edging the Crandall University Chargers of Moncton 7-6 in 12 innings Sunday at the Gerry Marsh Field in New Waterford.
Nathan Brewer donned the hero?s cap for the Capers by dropping down a suicide bunt that allowed the winning run to score in the home half of the 12th inning.
The winning pitcher was Greg MacKinnon, while Ben Wistron was tagged with the loss.
CBU?s top hitters were Josh Spooney, Matt Oliver and Greg MacKinnon, who all chipped in with two singles.
Serge Vautour had a two-run home run and a single for Crandall, while Adam Campbell added a single.
?It was back and forth,? said CBU head coach Adam Shibinette. ?We had a 5-4 lead going into the seventh. We made a couple of errors and they scored two runs to take the lead. And then we tied it up in the bottom half of the seventh inning to send it to extra innings.?
The Capers split two games against Crandall in Moncton on Saturday. In Game 1, CBU lost to Crandall 4-0. The Capers rebounded to win Game 2 by a score of 9-4.
?We?re really proud of the guys for accomplishing a feat like winning four straight Atlantic conference championships. It?s a good thing for us,? said Shibinette. ?It shows off our local talent down here.?
The CBU team had already qualified for a spot at the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association championship taking place in Ottawa starting Friday and finishing on Sunday.
CBU won the national title when they hosted the tournament in 2005.
