Jessica Ennis on way to London 2012 glory after ... - BBC World News

Jessica Ennis has taken a huge step towards her goal of winning the London 2012 heptathlon after a strong showing in the long jump. It was all smiles after her second jump though, as she flew to 6.40m. She went one better in her final attempt with a jump of 6.48m, giving her 1,001 points and a lead of 258 points overall. The distance put her in second position in this event behind Tatyana Chernova, who jumped 6.54m. Ennis is now the overwhelming favourite with only the javelin and 800m still to go. The Sheffield-born star started the day on 4,158 points, her best ever first-day score and enough for a lead of 184 points. Austra Skujyte of Lithuania faulted her first two jumps but eventually jumped 6.25m, and is still second overall. Katarina Johnson-Thompson, the 19-year-old Briton, again impressed with a jump of 6.19m on her second attempt and lies in 12th overall. Louise Hazel is down in 31st despite a season-best jump of 5.77m. PICTURES: Athletics day 2
