'Blue Moon' Rises Friday: How to Watch Online

Night sky observers around the world will have the chance to see a special full moon ? one that has been dubbed a "blue moon" ? this Friday (Aug. 31). But, even those who are thwarted by less-than-ideal conditions outside will be able to tune in online to see spectacular lunar views.

The web-based Slooh Space Camera, which showcases live views from various telescopes around the world, is hosting a special broadcast of the?blue moon on Friday, beginning at 6 p.m. EDT (2200 GMT).

Slooh's program will feature live shots of the moon from an observatory in the Canary Islands, off the coast of Africa, and views of the sun from the Prescott Observatory in Arizona. The dual feeds will treat viewers to simultaneous real-time observations of the moon and sun in true color, Slooh officials said.

The broadcast will also pay tribute to the life of?astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon. Armstrong died on Aug. 25 at the age of 82, following complications from heart surgery.

Astronomer Bob Berman, Slooh editor and a columnist at Astronomy Magazine will be joined by Duncan Copp, the filmmaker and producer behind the acclaimed documentary "In the Shadow of the Moon," to discuss Armstrong's life and NASA's Apollo moon program. "This Blue Moon that Slooh will explore Friday night is somewhat rare, but not as rare as the courage and talent of the late Neil Armstrong, the first human to set foot on our nearest celestial neighbor," Berman said in a statement. "To honor him, Slooh will explore the Sea of Tranquility with its Canary Island 20-inch telescope, live, and have guests who will reveal some of the lesser-known secrets of that historic 1969 event. I think many of our visitors will be in for quite a surprise."

This week's blue moon will be the last one visible until July 2015, Slooh officials said. Interestingly enough, the term "blue moon" does not refer to the moon's color, but rather has to do with it being the second of two full moons within the same calendar month.

The?definition of a blue moon, as we use it today, was actually the result of a mistake. Long ago, the term "blue moon" was used to describe absurd happenings.

In 1946, amateur astronomer James Pruett misinterpreted the term as it was used in the Maine Farmers' Almanac. Pruett penned a piece for Sky & Telescope magazine with the incorrect assumption that a blue moon refers to the second full moon of a month with two (rather than the third full moon in a season that has four of them, as was written in the almanac).

The first full moon of this month occurred on Aug. 1. Typically, blue moons occur every 2.7 years, and while they do not differ much from other full moons, the lunar views on Friday should serve as a fitting tribute to the legacy of Armstrong and the Apollo program.

Packing the Season into Jars: Recipe & Giveaway | You Grow Girl

Canning is joyful, fun, and creative activity, but make no mistake, it is work. I?m not sure if it is the creative impulse or the fact of the hard work, but all canners inevitably seem to follow a trajectory that begins in hesitation and fear (OMG will I accidentally kill my friends and family!?), and ends in crazed jar hoarding and pimping. Many of you have followed along on this website or social media where I have mentioned the lengths I have gone to to acquire and schlep home pretty jars that I can?t buy here in Canada. For practical and budgetary reasons I still put up the bulk of my wares in the cheapest jars I can find wither thrifted or new, but the fact remains that I want the aesthetics of my handiwork to reflect the quality of the work I put into filling them. I gotta have nice jars!

I?ve tried all manner of jars over the years, and so far the jars that I love and covet most are simply crafted, glass and rubber works of art made by a German company called Weck. I bought my first set of fancy pants Weck canning jars 4 years ago and I?ve been hooked ever since. Several boxes later and I have managed to assemble a collection that includes at least one of very nearly every size and shape in their catalogue. The first jars I bought back in 2008 were the larger deco and tulip designs. They are absolutely gorgeous jars to be sure, but I immediately discovered that their awkward sizing and shape makes them difficult to can. I fumbled around over the course of two years, sustaining several minor burns, before giving up and deciding that they would be better used elsewhere.

When it comes to practical applications as well as canning ease my favourites are the Mini Tulips and the straight-sided Mold Jars. They?re great for canning condiments, jellies, and jams, and they are easy to can using standard canning tools.

Fortunately, the jars that are not best suited to canning with standard tools have all sorts of practical applications. I use the very tiniest jars for storing herb infused salts, spices, and seeds. The largest jars are great for making herb or fruit infused vinegars and alcohol as they do not have parts that can be corroded by acid. They also make perfect, stackable fridge storage containers. My favourite use for them is for storing edible flowers and herbs in the fridge longterm. Zucchini flowers only last a day in a normal plastic container, and they will wilt quickly in a typical, metal-topped Mason jar. However, they last for ages in the all-glass Weck jars as do roses, nasturtiums, and even day lilies. They?re genius!

If jam is not your thing, I suggest my Old-Fashioned Tomato Catsup recipe. I do batches of this up every year and the tulip jars are the perfect size. I also do up several of the Mini Mold and Mini Deco jars as they pack just enough for a single-meal serving portion that you can take on a picnic or camping without worrying about leftovers to refrigerate.

RECIPE: Golden Plum and Vanilla Jam

Last year I lucked into Green Gages at the farmers market. This greenish, sweet plum variety is rich and flavourful like honey ? the best I have ever had. Unfortunately, they are not easy to come by around here and it had been years since I had them last. It could be years until I find them again. I had a few fresh vanilla pods on hand at the time and while I was hesitant to alter these perfect plums in any way, I took the plunge and added the vanilla. It turned out to be the best plum jam I had made to date.

This summer, a basket of sweet golden plums begged for the same treatment. Having tested this recipe a few times now, I?ve come to the conclusion that their light sweetness is even better suited to the subtle vanilla flavouring.

Please note that this recipe uses less sugar than a typical jam and will turn out softer as a result. Add more sugar if you prefer a firmer set.

Ingredients:

• 2 1/2 lbs golden plums
• 2 cups sugar
• Juice of 1 lemon
• 1 vanilla pod, split in half

Prepare the vanilla pod ahead of time by cutting it in half lengthwise and scraping out the seeds with a knife.

Cut the plums in half and remove the pit. You can skip this step if you are using small, Mirabelle plums, but it will demand that you strain or pick out the plums before jarring.

Gently cook the plums and sugar on med-low heat until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Stir in the lemon juice and vanilla (seeds and pod), increase the heat to medium, and simmer for 10 minutes until the plums are cooked through and mushy.

Pick out the pieces of vanilla pod (leave the seeds) as well as the plum pits if you left the plums intact before cooking.

Turn the heat up to high and bring to a rapid boil to reach set point (220?F), about 10-15 minutes. Remember to keep stirring!! My second batch was much darker than the first because the bottom burned caramelized. I was paying too much attention to the thermometer and did not stir often enough.

Pour into sterilized jars leaving 1/4? headspace and heat-process the jars in a boiling-water bath for 10 minutes.

Despite the growing number of researches supporting the claims stating that acupuncture is effective in treating a wide range of illness, many people remain sceptical about the capacity of this traditional medicine to improve overall health and fitness. Does acupuncture really work or not?

D-backs trade Saunders to Orioles for Lindstrom

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Eager to bolster an inexperienced pitching staff during their first playoff run since 1997, the Baltimore Orioles obtained left-hander Joe Saunders on Sunday in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Baltimore gave Arizona right-handed reliever Matt Lindstrom and cash considerations or a player to be named later.

Saunders, who was scheduled to start Sunday against San Diego, was 6-10 with a 4.22 ERA in 21 starts with Arizona this season. He won 12 games last season while helping the Diamondbacks win their first NL West title since 2007.

Baltimore began the day tied for the second American League wild-card spot with Oakland and in third place in the AL East, only four games behind the division-leading New York Yankees.

"I like our ballclub's chances," said Dan Duquette, the Orioles vice president of baseball operations. "There's an old saying: If you're going in the right direction, keep walking. So the addition of Joe Saunders gives us a chance to keep walking in the right direction. And I think it gives us better balance against the left-handed lineups that we're going to be facing."

Saunders was born in nearby northern Virginia, played high school ball in Virginia and pitched at Virginia Tech before being drafted in the first round of the 2002 draft by the Los Angeles Angels.

"We've liked Joe Saunders for quite a while," Duquette said. "We had some discussions with him in the offseason. He's a local kid and a professional left-handed pitcher. He's won more than he's lost in the big leagues, he's pitched in the American League, he's pitched in the playoffs. He's pitched in a tough ballpark in Arizona."

The Orioles have only one left-hander in the bullpen and a rotation that includes rookies Miguel Gonzalez, Wei-Yin Chen and Steve Johnson.

"We just liked his experience, which I think compliments our starting rotation," Duquette said of Saunders. "And I also like the fact he's left-handed."

Saunders, 31, has pitched for the Angels and Diamondbacks since launching his big league career in 2005.

"I just like this addition of veteran left-handed depth to our staff," Duquette said. "It helps solidify the starting rotation while we're waiting for (injured) Jason Hammel to return. Then, if Jason Hammel does return, it gives us another good left-handed option because Joe Saunders is very good left-on-left. While we're waiting for (left-handed reliever Troy) Patton to come back, if we have several starters doing well, Joe gives us more depth and experience to our pitching staff."

Lindstrom went 1-0 with a 2.72 ERA in 34 appearances with the Orioles this season. He has held right-handers to a .207 average and scoreless in 10 of his past 11 outings.

Lindstrom has played six major league seasons with Miami, Houston, Colorado and Baltimore.

"He's another right-handed power arm. He's got some experience here in the West as well. We're pretty familiar with him, and you can see we like power arms in our bullpen, so he'll be a good addition," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said.

Duquette believed Saunders would be more valuable to the Orioles than Lindstrom at this point in the season.

"Matt Lindstrom did a nice job for us. He contributed to the bullpen," Duquette said. "I just think the left-handed addition to our starting rotation and the capability to get more innings at a high level was better for the team at this stage of the season. And who knows? Joe Saunders is a local kid. Maybe he's with us beyond this year. That's something we can take a look at. It certainly strengthens us now."

To fill Lindstrom's place on the 25-man roster, the Orioles recalled right-hander Jake Arrieta from Triple-A Norfolk. Arrieta, Baltimore's opening day starter, went 3-9 with a 6.13 ERA in 18 starts with the Orioles before being optioned to Norfolk on July 5.

The Diamondbacks had talked about going to a six-man rotation so they could keep rookie Tyler Skaggs in the big leagues, but went in a different direction. With Saunders gone, Skaggs has his spot.

Arizona general manager Kevin Towers said the trade had a lot to do with the team's young pitching. Skaggs, Patrick Corbin and Wade Miley are all rookies, while Trevor Cahill and Ian Kennedy are the only ones left from the opening day rotation.

How ocean currents affect global climate becoming better understood

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Florida State University oceanographer Kevin Speer has a "new paradigm" for describing how the world's oceans circulate -- and with it he may help reshape science's understanding of the processes by which wind, water, sunlight and other factors interact and influence the planet's climate.

A Florida State University professor of oceanography with a passion for teaching, Speer and a colleague recently published a significant paper in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Working with John Marshall, an oceanography professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Speer reviewed -- or essentially synthesized -- vast amounts of previous data on ocean circulation (including their own earlier papers). As a result, they have created what Speer calls a new paradigm in the study of ocean currents on a global scale.

Here's how it works: Basically, the oceans, together with the atmosphere, rebalance heat on the planet. The sun shines on Earth and heats up the tropics more than the poles. Near the poles, the ocean is cold and the water sinks; near the equator, the surface of the ocean is inviting and warm -- and floats on top of the colder deep water.

So the question is this: Where does the water that goes down come back up?

Speer, Marshall and other oceanographers now believe that it comes back up in the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica -- not as much in the warm oceans as had been previously thought.

"We're not saying that nothing comes up in the rest of the World Ocean, just that the main thrust is in the Southern Ocean," Speer said. "To a large extent it's driven by the wind."

Very strong winds, to be precise.

In the rough waters around Antarctica, sailors call those winds the "Roaring Forties" and the "Furious Fifties." They originate near the Equator, where hot air rises and then is pushed toward the North and South poles by cooler air that rushes in to take its place.

The resulting "eddy-driven upwelling" in the Southern Ocean, as Speer characterizes it, may in fact describe the most important process to date that helps scientists understand the role of the ocean and climate.

Speer, who holds a doctorate in physical oceanography from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program, spent years living in France as an oceanographic researcher for a French governmental agency. (Yes, he's fluent in French.)

Today, from his office on the Florida State campus, Speer serves as interim director of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Institute, a warren of intriguing laboratories just a few steps outside his door. It is there that Speer helps students and postdoctoral researchers learn about how climate works.

The laboratory's equipment includes a large, vintage rotating table designed nearly a half-century ago by the lab's founder, Florida State meteorology Professor Richard Pfeffer. (The device may be old, but it's one of the biggest and best in the United States, Speer says). Here students can recreate the ocean's churning and study natural phenomena such as the Antarctic circumpolar current.

Speer and his students have been studying ocean currents thanks to $2.5 million in funding from a larger $10 million National Science Foundation grant that FSU shares with eight other universities and institutions worldwide. Taliban deny report of Haqqani commander's death

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A Taliban spokesman in Afghanistan rejected reports that the son of the founder of the powerful Haqqani militant network has been killed, even as senior insurgents and members of the Pakistani government said they believe Badruddin Haqqani was dead.

Zabiullah Mujahid said in an email sent to reporters late Saturday that Haqqani is alive and in good health in Afghanistan.

The statement conflicts with assertions by a senior Taliban commander that a U.S. drone strike in Pakistan killed Haqqani. Pakistani intelligence officials have also said they are 90 percent certain he was killed in an American missile strike Tuesday in the North Waziristan region. They said their information was based on reports received from their agents in the field but acknowledged they haven't spoken to anyone who has seen the body.

If confirmed, Haqqani's death would mark a major blow to the organization founded by his father, Jalaluddin Haqqani, which is viewed by the U.S. as a powerful enemy in Afghanistan. The son is considered the network's day-to-day operations commander.

The Haqqani network has been blamed for a series of high-profile attacks and kidnappings in Afghanistan.

"A number of media have reported that Badruddin Haqqani has been killed. We would like to inform all media that this rumor is not correct," Mujahid said in the email.

"Badruddin Haqqani is in the country and his is occupied with his operational responsibilities. He is alive and healthy. The rumor about him being killed is more propaganda of the enemy," he said.

The senior Taliban commander's assertion that Badruddin died in a drone strike has not been independently confirmed, and the U.S. does not comment publicly on its drone program, which is widely reviled by the Pakistani public and has been a source of tension with Islamabad.

All except Mujahid spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the news.

The areas where the American drone strikes generally occur are extremely remote and dangerous, making it difficult for reporters or others to verify a particular person's death.

Badruddin is considered a vital part of the Haqqani structure and is believed to have played an active role in kidnappings, extortion and high-profile operations in Afghanistan.

Replacing him would be a challenge but not impossible, said Daniel Markey, a Pakistan expert at the Council on Foreign Relations.

"The question would be whether anyone would be as trusted, as well-placed, would have forged the kind of longstanding connections and would have the kind of pedigree that he has," said Markey. "This is a big hit if it's true but it's not going to put them out of business."

The U.S. State Department has designated Badruddin, along with his father and brothers ? Nasiruddin and Sirajuddin ? as terrorists. The State Department said in May 2011 that Badruddin sits on the Miram Shah Shura, a group that controls all Haqqani network activities and coordinates attacks in southeastern Afghanistan.

Badruddin is also believed to have been responsible for the 2008 kidnapping of New York Times reporter, David Rohde, the department said.

After their father effectively retired in 2005, Badruddin and his brother Sirajuddin expanded the network into kidnapping and extortion, both highly profitable for the organization, according to a recent report by the West Point, N.Y.-based Combating Terrorism Center. Ukraine extradites suspect of Putin murder plot: report

Ukraine on Saturday extradited one of the men suspected of plotting to assassinate President Vladimir Putin, state-owned Channel One reported.

Ilya Pyanzin, who was arrested in Odessa in February, had already been taken to Moscow, the channel said, showing him at Odessa airport and then aboard a plane in handcuffs.

"Now Pyanzin will await trial in one of the Moscow jails," the report said.

The alleged plan to bomb Putin's motorcade was disclosed on Russian state television just days before the March 4 presidential election and was quickly dismissed by critics as a Kremlin effort to drum up support for the Russian leader.

Pyanzin and a second arrested suspect, a Chechen Adam Osmayev had been held in jail for allegedly plotting to kill the Russian leader who was was re-elected in the March ballot to a third presidential term.

State television channels have broadcast apparent confessions admitting that they were acting on the orders of Islamist militants.

Osmayev, who is the alleged leader of the plot, is still in the Odessa jail, having asked the European Court of Human Rights to rule on the legitimacy of Russia's extradition request.

Evolution Fresh to open juicery in Rancho Cucamonga, California

Evolution Fresh, a subsidiary to Starbucks, plans to open a high-tech juicery to expand the company's production and distribution capacity in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

Expected to get operational in late 2013, the new juicery will produce Evolution Fresh juices currently made at its existing juicery in San Bernardino and will support 160 manufacturing jobs.

Starbucks channel development president Jeff Hansberry said that the company's new juicery marks an important milestone as they continue to revolutionize the $3.4bn and growing cold-crafted juice category.

"It will more than quadruple our production and distribution capacity while continuing to deliver the flavor, vitamins, and nutrients of raw fruits and vegetables retained by Evolution Fresh's innovative use of high pressure processing (HPP)," Hansberry said.

The $70m, 260,000ft? juicery will be capable of peeling, squeezing, cracking and pressing approximately four to five times the amount of juice per year as the current facility using the company's never-heated HPP technology.

Evolution Fres has also added three juices to its current line-up in select natural food and premium grocery stores across the West Coast along with the introduction of a new flavor Raspberry Watermelon.

The new line-up features Cucumber Pineapple Ginger - a balance of sweet and spicy, refreshing cucumber and pineapple juices with a hint of ginger.

Pineapple Coconut Water is light with a touch of pineapple, Spicy Lemonade includes lemonade with a hint of ginger and cayenne and New Raspberry Watermelon features a blend of watermelon complemented with raspberries.

The online payday loan lead generator business is definitely making a name for itself in the online business world. Their efforts to continue to keep fraudulent activity out and maintain a profitable business of auction type sales safe and secure is ongoing. Any person who feels like their information was retrieved by a person or company for fraudulent practices should file a report right away.
