While scrolling through my Facebook news feed, I saw a status from a girl I knew who said she didn?t allow her boyfriend to have a girl best friend. I thought this was a very interesting view. It took me back to the age-old question: Can men and women truly be friends?

Within the last few years, in which I have actually paid attention to relationships, I have noticed a lot of the insecurities and trust issues that some people have. A tricky area of relationships seems to be the balance between friends and your significant other. Your friends usually have been around much longer than the person your involved with. So, they feel a sense of some might say claim, but I?ll say priority. They were there to pick you up at your lowest point. A very solid bond has been established with these very people. The bond becomes so strong you become best friends, a second family even. Things change however when you add girlfriends and boyfriends into the equation.

Truthfully, it is completely irrational to think that things will continue to stay as normal as they were before. However, your friends shouldn?t be removed from your life just because you may have ?fallen in love.? I find that in this stage of love things can begin to sometimes take a turn for the worst. You think you?re going to just hang out your friend. But no, instead everywhere they go their significant other isn?t too far in tow. From a friend?s perspective, if I don?t go on dates with you or lay in bed for a threesome, I?m confused at where a line can be drawn; a line that would enable both sides to get their own personal time.

I don?t think it?s necessary to ban your significant other from having close friends of the opposite sex. I believe it should all come down to trust. So, if you can?t simply just trust the person, then why are you with them? As the day draw nearer for me to head back to college for my sophomore year, I dread the amount of balance that will have to come. Since most of my close friends are now in relationships, causing me to live in a place I call ?Fifth Wheel City?. By the end of the year I hope to finally figure out how to make relationships and friendship co-exist in a happy world. All without the terrible implementing of the ?Odd Wheel? or the ?Odd Man Odd? syndrome.

Did you watch the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony on Friday night?

I was chatting to Chelsea (my life-partner) about it this morning and we both noted how fun it was to experience the richness of British culture watching the Queen, Mr. Bean and James Bond during the opening ceremony?

Ever noticed how when you visit some countries, you feel pulled into a magical reality, rich with meaning?

?while other countries have cultures that feel flat, repressed or shallow?

You may not have thought about it, but your relationship also has a culture?

The two of you give off a ?vibe? that others can pick up on. And because you spend so much time with your chosen mate, the culture in your relationship will largely determine how your life turns out, so this is an important distinction.

Having said that, the question that begs is:

Is the culture in your relationship one that feels welcoming, exciting, and warm with the intimacy that comes from being fully known and deeply seen by your lover?

OR

?is the culture of your relationship one that feels heavy, cold and unsafe, where you both tiptoe around on eggshells to avoid provoking each other?

Which more accurately describes your relationship?

You most likely relate to both, depending on where you are in your lives together.

At one point, the culture in Chelsea and my relationship was like the culture of a war torn country ? cold, hard and deserted. It seemed like every communication turned into a fight ? every bid for love was seen as an attack.

I had to do something, because despite all my communication skills learned as an internationally acclaimed speaker and trainer, I still could not accomplish the simple task of getting the woman that I loved to respond to me.

a ?culture of intimacy? in your relationship?

The culture in your relationship is determined by your ability to communicate with your partner in a way that resolves conflict and creates intimacy.

Of course, this skill was never taught to us as we were growing up, so most of us feel emotionally shipwrecked when conflict arises during the Power Struggle stage of our relationship.

I know I did.

I discovered that the communication skills required to get me into a relationship were very different from those required to get me through the Power Struggle stage of a relationship.

So I began devouring every book and course I could find on communication and conflict resolution? And in the process, Chelsea and I learned a new set of communication skills that saved our relationship.

A pleasant side-effect of using these skills has been that we?ve created a culture of acceptance, unconditional love and mutual respect in our relationship, without actually setting out specifically to do so.

Sunbeds cause skin cancer ? the evidence is clear - Cancer ...

Sunbeds increase the risk of skin cancer

We?ve known that using sunbeds can cause skin cancer for several years.

And this week this message became louder?and clearer?than ever before with the publication of the strongest evidence yet of the link between the tanning devices and skin cancer.

In this post we?ll look at some of what we already knew about sunbeds and skin cancer, what this new study adds, and what we should be doing about it.

What we already knew

Sunbeds were first classified by the International Agency for Research in Cancer (IARC) as ?Group 1 carcinogens? in 2009 ? we blogged about this at the time. This classification ? which means that there?s clear evidence of a link ? followed the publication of a thorough review of the available evidence. It showed that people who start using sunbeds before the age of 35 have a 75 per cent increased risk of malignant melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer.

What?s in the new study?

This new research updates this previous study by including eight more studies, bringing the total number analysed to 27.

The new results showed that people who had ever used a sunbed were 20 per cent more likely to subsequently develop melanoma, compared to people who had never used one. And when the researchers controlled for other factors that influence melanoma risk?like sun exposure and sun sensitivity the increase in risk became larger ? ?29 per cent (we?ll talk more about these ?relative? risks later).

Although the previous study also found an increased risk for such ?ever users??(this group includes all ages who have used a sunbed),?it wasn?t statistically significant, meaning the researchers couldn?t be sure if the result was due to chance. This new analysis included more sunbed users than the previous study, and confirms that it?s not just younger sunbed users who are at an increased risk of melanoma.

But the study did reiterate that young people are particularly at risk when they use sunbeds. People who started using sunbeds before the age of 35 were 87 per cent more likely to develop melanoma (an update on the previous estimate of 75 per cent) compared to people who have never used a sunbed.

So this new study constitutes conclusive evidence that people who?ve ever used a sunbed have a higher risk of melanoma, and and that there?s even higher estimate for the risk for people who start using sunbeds before age 35.

The authors also looked to see if the risk of developing melanoma increases with increasing number of sunbed sessions. Their data suggested that each extra sunbed session a person has every year increased their melanoma risk by 1.8 per cent. But this result wasn?t statistically significant, so we will have to await further studies before we can be sure of this figure.

How many cases of melanoma do sunbeds cause?

The numbers we?ve given above are so-called ?relative? risks ? they compare the rates of cancer between two different groups (in this case, sunbed users versus non-users) and work out the percentage difference. But what about the absolute numbers? How many people are affected?

The authors estimate that sunbeds are responsible for 3,438 (5.4 per cent) out of 63,942 malignant melanoma cases in the 18 European countries studied. For the UK, they estimate that sunbeds cause about 440 malignant?melanomas each year ? more than one a day ? and just under one hundred deaths. They base this estimate on 2008 statistics, which show there were around 11,600 new cases of malignant melanoma and around 2,000 malignant melanoma deaths in the UK.

According to the latest data, there were 12,800 new cases of malignant melanoma and around 2,200 deaths from malignant melanoma in the UK in 2010.

It?s important to emphasise that the authors calculations are just estimates, and that there are several reasons why we need to be careful when using them, including one intriguing hypothesis that sunbed-induced melanomas are slightly different to those caused by the sun, and may have a different mortality rate.

Compared to the overall number of cases, the 440-odd cases caused by sunbeds each year might seem comparatively small. (UV exposure from the sun is the cause of most melanomas). But these cases caused by sunbeds are entirely preventable.

Other types of skin cancer

Importantly, the study also found that using sunbeds increases the risk of two other types of generally less serious but far more common types of skin cancer too.

The risk of basal cell carcinoma increased by nine per cent compared to people who?d never used a sunbed, and the study also confirmed that risk of squamous cell carcinoma more than doubled.

So what?s the take home message?

It?s now clearer than ever that sunbeds are not a safe alternative to tanning from the sun. There?s now strong evidence that people who have ever used a sunbed have an increased risk of melanoma ? the most serious form of skin cancer ? and this risk is even higher in people who start using sunbeds before the age of 35.

To re-iterate what we said above, the increased risk of skin cancer from sunbeds may be relatively small, but it is completely avoidable. Cancer Research UK will be using the findings of this and other studies to continue and strengthen our work to protect children and young people from sunbeds, and to warn adults of the dangers.

Whether you?ve used sunbeds before or not, it?s a good idea to keep an eye out for unusual changes to ?your skin, particularly any changes in the size, shape or colour of a mole, freckle or normal patch of skin. It probably won?t be cancer, but we know that cancer is usually easier to treat when it?s diagnosed at an early stage.

Here come some more juicy tidbits from recently unsealed documents tied to the upcoming Apple (AAPL) vs. Samsung (005930)?extravaganza! From rejected settlement offers to muscle flexing on both sides, things are starting to heat up in San Jose, California. In the latest round of documents examined by All Things D, a few new items of interest have been uncovered. Whether or not Samsung?s Android devices are really Apple ?copycats? is often debated in court and on tech blogs, but some newly uncovered internal Samsung documents suggest that Samsung may have its work cut out for it while trying defend its designs.

Samsung was forced by the court to furnish a number of internal documents, and similarities between Samsung?s Android devices and Apple?s wares are apparently often a topic of discussion. The papers include records of several Samsung employees discussing the similarities themselves. According to one document, Samsung even had a number of reports from Best Buy stating that customers were returning Samsung?s Galaxy tablets because when they bought them, they thought they were getting iPads.

The South Korea-based consumer electronics giant is currently doing its best to prevent these damning documents from being used in the trial, for obvious reasons. If they are permitted as evidence, however, it could certainly spell trouble for Samsung.

Secret identities aren?t just for superheroes anymore. Researchers have found that a protein present in everything from amoebas to people is living a double life. Once it binds to DNA, the protein, called RfaH, rips apart?and then refolds into a different shape, to do a different job.

RfaH is a transcription protein?attached to or freed from a stretch of DNA, it determines if a gene is expressed or not. But once the protein has carried out its task, its helical structure unravels. Within seconds, it refolds into a barrel structure, which has a new role, this time in translation, where it helps the cell produce amino acids for new proteins. The study is in the journal Cell. The next step is to find out if the barrel can refold into the helix. After that, researchers want to see if proteins similar to RfaH?which are present in all life on Earth?are capable of comparable molecular contortion. Which would mean a lot more bang for our protein buck.

NEW DELHI: UPA candidate Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday emerged victorious in the race to the Rashtrapati Bhavan, defeating NDA nominee P.A Sangma by a huge margin.
According to Rajya Sabha Secretary General V.K Agnihotri, the retuning officer for the 19th July Presidential elections,? Mukherjee bagged votes with a value of 7,13,763 out of a 10,29, 750 votes polled in the Presidential election 2012.
Addressing reporters here this evening, Dr Agnihotri said 4,659 MPs and MLAs of the state Assemblies cast their votes during the polling of which 81 votes were declared invalid.
The value of the valid votes was 10,29,750.
While votes polled by UPA nominee Pranab Mukherjee were 3,095 with a total value of 7,13,763, the votes polled by his opponent P.A Sangma were 1,483 with a total value of 3,15,987.
?The quota sufficient for a win in the elections was 5,14,876. Since the first preference votes cast for? Mukherjee had a total value more than the requirement for a win, I declare that? Pranab Mukherjee has been declared elected for office of the President,? Dr Agnihotri said.
Mukherjee got 69 per cent of the votes cast, while? Sangma netted 31 per cent of the polls, officials said.
Mukherjee got more votes than President Pratibha Patil received when she contested the Presidential polls.
Dr Agnihotri said a total of 81 votes, with a total value of 18,221, were declared invalid. This excluded the vote by Samajwadi Party Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, which had been cancelled.
Out of the total 748 MPs,? Mukherjee got the support of 527 while his rival P.A Sangma polled 206 votes in his favour. A total of 15 votes were declared invalid.
Each MP has a vote value of 708. There are a total of 776 voters in both the Houses of Parliament.
The Electoral College also consists of 4,120 MLAs in the states.
Agnihotri said the polling was held in a free and fair manner.
He said he would now present the results to the Election Commission.
The information will also be sent to the Law Ministry for them to start the procedure for installing the President in office, he said.
Mukherjee will be administered the oath of office by the Chief Justice of India at 11:30 AM on 25th July.
Among the states, there was apparent cross-voting in Karnataka where BJP runs a government.? Mukherjee got the majority votes in the 224-member Assembly with 117 MLAs voting for him.
Sangma could net only 103 votes while three votes were invalid. One MLA did not vote. The value of votes polled to? Mukherjee was 15,327 while it was 13,493 for? Sangma.
In Andhra Pradesh, which has a 294-member Assembly, Mukherjee got the support of 182 MLAs including that of Congress and YSR Congress, while? Sangma received the support of three.
Five were invalid. In terms of vote value,? Mukherjee got 26,936 while? Sangma got 444. A total of 190 MLAs
voted because TDP and TRS abstained. Each MLA in Andhra Pradesh has a vote value of 148.
In the 126-member Assam Assembly,? Mukherjee got 110 votes while? Sangma got 13. Two votes were invalid while one did not vote. In terms of vote value,? Mukherjee got 12,760 while? Sangma got 1,508.
In Bihar too, where the ruling JD(U) has declared support for? Mukherjee, the UPA candidate got 146 out of the 240 votes polled in the 243-member Assembly,? Sangma got 90, mostly from BJP, which shares power with JD(U).? Mukherjee?s vote value in the state was 25,258 while for? Sangma it was 15,570. Three votes were invalid while one did not vote.
In the 90-member Haryana Assembly,? Mukherjee got 53 votes while? Sangma received 29. Eight were invalid. In terms of vote value,? Mukherjee got 5,936 and? Sangma got 3,248.
Mukherjee got 59 votes and? Sangma 123 votes in 182-member Gujarat Assembly where BJP has the majority. In terms of vote value,? Mukherjee got 8,673 while? Sangma got 18,081.
In BJP-ruled states of Chhattisgarh and Goa,? Sangma got a majority of votes.
In the 90-member Chhattisgarh Assembly, 39 votes went to? Mukherjee while? Sangma got 50. One vote was invalid. In terms of vote value,? Mukherjee got 5,031 while? Sangma got 6,450.
Mukherjee got nine votes and? Sangma 31 in 40-member Goa Assembly. In terms of vote value,? Mukherjee got 180 while? Sangma got 620.
Mukherjee led Jammu and Kashmir and surprisingly in Jharkhand where BJP shares power with JMM. In BJP-ruled Himachal Pradesh? Mukherjee trailed as expected.
In the 68-member Himachal Pradesh Assembly,? Mukherjee got 23 votes while? Sangma won 44 votes. One vote was invalid.? Mukherjee?s vote value was 1,173 while it was 2,244 for? Sangma.
Jammu and Kashmir gave? Mukherjee 68 votes while? Sangma got 15 votes. Two votes were declared invalid.? Mukherjee?s vote value here stands at 4,896 while? Sangma got 1,080. The Assembly has 87 MLAs.
In the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly,? Mukherjee got 60 votes while Sangma won 20.? Mukherjee?s vote value is 10,560 while? Sangma stands at 3,520.
In Kerala, it was a clean sweep for? Mukherjee. He won all the 124 votes polled while one was invalid.? Sangma drew a blank. CPI and RSP members abstained from voting which has a 140 member Assembly. Vote value for? Mukherjee in Kerala stood at 18,848.
In the 230-member Madhya Pradesh Assembly,? Mukherjee got 73 votes while? Sangma got 156. Four votes were invalid. In terms of the vote share,? Mukherjee got 9,563 and? Sangma 20,436.
The polling percentage was less than expected this time with only 72 per cent of the total votes ? valued at 11 lakh ? polled.
The vote of the SP chief had been declared invalid by the Election Commission on the ground that he violated the code of secrecy by revealing his vote. Yadav had initially voted for? Sangma and then torn the ballot paper when he realised his mistake.

AP Essay: Will anyone really miss the box office?

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A Warner Bros. executive emailed a fact sheet about "The Dark Knight Rises" to Hollywood reporters a few days ago and ended with two hopeful syllables for the film's box-office prospects: "Ka ching."

Cash registers have indeed been ringing at theaters worldwide this weekend as millions shell out for the finale to Christopher Nolan's epic Batman trilogy. But the shootings that left 12 dead and 58 wounded at a "Dark Knight Rises" screening in Colorado on Friday have silenced the usual box-office crowing by studios to let the world know they've unleashed another blockbuster.

Warner, the studio behind the Batman flicks, decided to hold off on releasing debut numbers for "The Dark Knight Rises" this weekend out of respect to the shooting victims and their families. Other studios followed suit, saying that like Warner, they would not issue their usual Sunday estimates, waiting instead until Monday, when they normally release final dollar counts for the weekend.

It's an unusual show of harmony in a business where studios jostle and elbow one another for the right to proclaim in ads: "The No. 1 movie in America!"

There's no doubt that "The Dark Knight Rises" will be the No. 1 film in America and beyond. Before Warner opted against weekend box-office reporting, the studio announced that the film took in $30.6 million domestically from shows that started just after midnight Friday, including the one in Aurora, Colo., where a gunman opened fire on an audience eager to be among the first to see the film.

That was the second-best result ever for a midnight debut, trailing only Warner's "Harry Potter" finale with $43.5 million over the same weekend last summer. Trade papers Hollywood Reporter and Variety were projecting about $75 million for the film's full first day Friday, which could result in a three-day weekend haul of around $170 million, second only to last May's "The Avengers" at $207.4 million and ahead of the then-record $158.4 million for 2008's "The Dark Knight."

But Hollywood's radio silence on box office this weekend leaves a curious void. No top-10 list for movie fans to mull over. No studio executives sharing audience age and gender breakdowns. No analysts slicing and dicing the numbers to determine if overall business was better than the same weekend's a year ago. No one reducing movies to the simple thumbs-up, thumbs-down judgment of whether they made too much or too little money.

The question on this box-office-less weekend is: Will anyone really miss it?

Sure, people like lists and rankings. Publishing has its best-seller lists, music has its pop charts, TV has its Nielsen ratings.

Many movie fans have an idle curiosity to see how particular releases do, some holding off on deciding if they'll see a film until they know if it's a hit or a flop. Yet most people are either sold on seeing a film based on the marketing or they'll wait until trusted friends catch it and give it a recommendation or a raspberry.

For books and music, the rankings simply say what's selling the best, and Nielsen ratings provide context on what share of the overall audience a show grabs.

Hollywood box office is all about dollars, the numbers always climbing, the records always shooting higher. But box-office receipts provide only a narrow glimpse of show business.

A movie that hauls in $150 million might sound like a winner, but it may have cost twice that much to make and market, and studios have to share the receipts with theaters. Conversely, a movie might flop with $50 million domestically but do two or three times that much business overseas and manage at least to make back its money.

Inflation raises a bigger issue in gauging box-office records by cash alone. Publishing and music count success in terms of units sold, and some countries measure films the same way, by the number of tickets they sell.

Hollywood perpetually breaks box-office records largely because ticket prices keep going up. In 2002, "Spider-Man" did what had been unthinkable to box-office analysts, pulling in $114.8 million to become the first movie to top $100 million over opening weekend.

This summer, over the same May weekend 10 years later, "The Avengers" did today's equivalent of the unthinkable with the first $200 million debut.

Average ticket prices in 2002: $5.80, meaning about 20 million tickets sold for "Spider-Man" over opening weekend. Average ticket prices today: $7.83, meaning about 26 million tickets sold for "The Avengers" in its first weekend.

But the ticket price for "The Avengers" would average out quite a bit higher because much of its business came from 3-D screenings, which cost a few extra dollars. With today's market-saturation release pattern, "The Avengers" also played on far more screens than "Spider-Man" did.

Likewise, "The Dark Knight Rises" is playing only in 2-D, so it's a superhero flick probably destined to be less of a box-office spectacle than "Avengers" because no one's paying extra to watch it wearing, well, spectacles.

Inflation really makes a difference gauging all-time box-office sensations. "Avatar," ''Titanic," ''The Avengers" and other top-grossing modern movies have more cash in the bank but lag behind such older films as "Gone with the Wind," ''Star Wars" and "The Sound of Music" in terms of actual tickets sold.

Warner and other studios did the right thing in muzzling the box-office machine this weekend. Counting dollars is trivial in light of the tragedy in Colorado.

But then, is it any less trivial this weekend than the other 51 weekends of the year?

NEW YORK (AP) - Katie Holmes has decided what her first major acting project will be since announcing her divorce from Tom Cruise: Broadway.

The actress will star in Theresa Rebeck's "Dead Accounts," a five-character comedy that will be directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O'Brien, producers said Thursday.

All eyes were on Holmes' next step as a single woman. Was it to be a big film or a small one? Or more TV? Her decision to return to the physically strenuous eight-show-a-week life of a Broadway stage actress indicates a willingness to jump into the deep end.

Her last appearance on Broadway, which also marked her debut, was in the 2008 production of "All My Sons." The news that she will return to a Times Square stage is also a signal that she may intend to stay in New York City.

Holmes first came to stardom in the teen soap opera "Dawson's Creek," and had roles in such well-regarded films as "The Ice Storm," ''Go" and "Wonder Boys."

After Holmes began dating Cruise, she took a three-year break from acting that concluded with the poorly received heist film "Mad Money." She followed that up with the wedding drama "The Romantics" and small roles in the comedies "The Extra Man" and Adam Sandler's "Jack and Jill," and the thrillers "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" and "The Son of No One." Though she starred in "Batman Begins" in 2005, she pulled out of "The Dark Knight."

Reviews for her work in Arthur Miller's classic 1947 "All My Sons" were mixed, with The Associated Press saying Holmes "has a striking physical presence, although not much vocal variety" and USA Today saying that "at best, she exhibits a girlish exuberance that could serve her well in certain stage roles."

The new Rebeck play, which had its world premiere at the Cincinnati Playhouse this winter, will open on Broadway this fall at the Music Box Theatre. Dates and other casting news will be announced later.

"Dead Accounts" centers on a son who returns to his family's home in Cincinnati flush with money, which raises red flags for his sister, who is living with their elderly parents. Holmes will play the sister role, a not-very-glamorous part for a woman who has lately landed on the cover of every tabloid.

Producers in a statement said the comedy "tackles the timely issues of corporate greed, small town values and whether or not your family will always welcome you back."

Holmes' announcement comes on the heels of word earlier this month that she and her soon-to-be-former husband had reached a divorce agreement. She and Cruise were married in Italy in 2006 and they have a 6-year-old daughter, Suri.

Rebeck, who was a driving force in the first season of NBC's "Smash," has written several plays, including the recent Broadway hits "Seminar" and "Mauritius."
