Oxford Fair president seeks public's input

Published on Friday, Dec 30, 2011 at 12:12 am | Last updated on Friday, Dec 30, 2011 at 12:12 am

OXFORD ? The president of the Oxford County Agricultural Society announces a public meeting will be held Sunday, Jan. 15, to discuss what people want to see at the annual Oxford Fair.

?We're going to ask the public for suggestions this year,? said newly elected President Jackie Young of Paris.

She took over after longtime President Suzanne Grover stepped down this month.

Young, who is also Oxford Fair's livestock superintendent, said one of the major changes to next year's fair is a return to the Wednesday to Sunday schedule. The dates are Sept. 12-15.

She said the schedule worked well in previous years, particularly because other fair schedules throughout the state have bumped into the beginning and end of the Oxford Fair.

Young said a number of people said they no longer feel ?a part? of the fair.

?We want to make sure they are a part of the fair,? she said.

The society Board of Directors is also looking for volunteers to help at the fair.

?We'd like to know what you would like to see at the Oxford Fair,? Young said of the goal of the meeting. ?I know we want it affordable. We just want to make it family fun atmosphere where you want to bring family and friends.?

Additionally, Young said that directors will be named to head events such as education day and senior day so that people will know who to call if they need assistance.

?We're trying to break it down to give each department its own department head,? she said.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the Oxford County Extension office at 9 Olson Road in Paris.

In January, Young will travel to Portland to meet with officials of statewide fairs to discuss the coming year's fair schedules, entertainment and other items.

The Oxford Fair takes place on the 100-acre Oxford Fairgrounds, and includes horse racing, livestock demonstrations, live music, carnival rides and other attractions.

Leaked memo details Verizon's $2 fee for paying your bill; autodraft or ACH the only way out (update: confirmed)

A couple of years back, AT&T offered select customers a $25 prepaid MasterCard to switch their billing over to autodraft. Soon, Verizon Wireless will be following Sprint's footsteps and charging you for every month that you aren't using that very system. Tactical differences aside, the leaked memo shown above details what has to be one of the most consumer-unfriendly policy changes since the carrier boosted its early termination fee for "advanced devices." Effective January 15th, any customer that opts to pay their wireless bill online or over the phone will be charged an extra $2 each month, and the only way to sidestep it is to sign up for AutoPay or to pay by electronic check, where there's no credit card fee passed on to the carrier.

For those unaware, AutoPay automatically drafts the most recent amount from either a linked checking / savings account or a credit card on file, and while we can understand VZW's desire to better control when it's getting paid, charging customers to make it happen is just downright ludicrous. Here's a thought, Verizon: enforce stricter penalties on late payments, or just offer those that shift to AutoPay a small discount for going out of their way to make your life a little easier. Or, you know, for all those hours that your network has been down during the holidays.

Update: Verizon has officially confirmed the change to its policies and the $2 surcharge you'll be hit with each month if you're not using autodraft or some other small subset of payment options. Head after the break for all the details straight from the horse's mouth.

[Thanks, Alex]

Michael Buble defeats Young Jeezy's "Hustlerz Ambition" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Michael Buble continued his "Christmas" reign at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart on Wednesday for the fifth consecutive week, keeping Adele and rapper Young Jeezy from the No. 1 position.

Buble's "Christmas" sold 467,000 copies in the run-up to the holiday weekend according to Nielsen SoundScan figures, edging out Adele's "21," which stayed put at No. 2.

The Canadian jazz singer's holiday album crossed 2.43 million sales, beaten only by Adele, who crossed 5.68 million sales of her album in the U.S. last week.

Only one new album entered the top 10 this week, with rapper Young Jeezy's fourth studio album "TM 103: Hustlerz Ambition" at No. 3, beating out Justin Bieber's "Under the Mistletoe" at No. 4 and Drake's "Take Care" at No. 5.

"TM 103" is Young Jeezy's last album in his "Thug Motivation" trilogy series, which began with 2005's "Let's Go Get It: Thug Motivation 101," and "The Inspiration" in 2006.

Critics received the rapper's fourth album positively, with Los Angeles Times' Jeff Weiss giving it three out of four stars and calling it "almost refreshingly relevant,". Rolling Stone magazine's Jonah Weiner gave the album three and half stars out of five, praising the rapper's charisma, saying "he rhymes with a luxuriously unhurried bravado that's contagious.

LMFAO held onto the top spot on the Digital Songs chart with "Sexy and I Know It" gaining sales from the holiday weekend, while Katy Perry's "One That Got Away" jumped from No. 6 to No. 2, boosted by the release of a B.o.B remix of the single.

Rihanna's "We Found Love" featuring Calvin Harris clocked in at No. 3, Bruno Mars' "Twilight: Breaking Dawn" single "It Will Rain" held at No. 4 and Jay-Z and Kanye West's "Ni**as in Paris" rounded out the top five.

When Defense Secretary Leon Panetta opined earlier this month that an Israeli attack on Iran?s nuclear facilities could ?consume the Middle East in a confrontation and a conflict that we would regret,? the Israelis went ballistic behind the scenes. Michael Oren, Israel?s ambassador to Washington, lodged a formal diplomatic protest known as a demarche. And the White House was thrust into action, reassuring the Israelis that the administration had its own ?red lines? that would trigger military action against Iran, and that there is no need for Jerusalem to act unilaterally.

The Israelis must have felt the knife touch their back.
Obama has little troubel throwing small democracies under the bus.
Now, with their existance at stake, Obama wants to reassure his Jewish base that he is Israel's best friend.
Why they would believe any of this, is beyond me.

Nursing moms upset with breastfeeding preferences at Target stores staged a "nurse-in" Wednesday at locations in Chicago and across the country. Local moms say the demonstration is meant to raise awareness about controversies over nursing in public. This latest outcry, they say, stems from a recent incident in Texas. There were so many employees confronting her, she said, that it was time to speak up.

Chavez prefaced his remarks at a military event in Caracas by saying, "I don't want to make any reckless accusations," but the Venezuelan president said he was concerned by something he finds "very, very, very strange."

Cyprus: Offshore gas find gets investor interest

(AP) ? A field off Cyprus where U.S. firm Noble Energy is conducting exploratory drilling holds an estimated 5-8 trillion cubic feet (140-230 billion cubic meters) of natural gas, a significant find for the small island, the country's president announced Wednesday.

Dimitris Christofias said the offshore discovery is attracting the interest of many foreign investors and is enabling the European Union member to contribute to the bloc's energy security. But it could also risk heightening tensions with rival Turkey, which doesn't recognize Cyprus as a sovereign state.

It's the first time the size of the deposit has been estimated based on actual drilling results. The site is some 115 miles (185 kilometers) south of the east Mediterranean island near a huge Israeli gas field being jointly developed by Noble Energy and Israeli energy company Delek, that is estimated at 17 trillion cubic feet (480 billion cubic meters).

Cyprus currently relies almost exclusively on imported oil for power generation and officials have said that a trillion cubic feet of gas could meet the island's energy needs for three decades.

"The discovery of hydrocarbons constitutes a historic development for our country and our people, filling us all with feelings of optimism for the future," Christofias said in a televised address.

More exploratory drilling will be needed at the field before work to extract the gas begins, Christofias said.

Noble Energy said the discovery further highlights the "quality and significance" of the area's oil and gas potential.

"We look forward to working closely with the Government of Cyprus to develop this discovery in a manner that maximizes value for all stakeholders," Noble Energy Chairman and CEO Charles D. Davidson said in a statement posted on the firm's Website.

Cyprus was split into an internationally recognized Greek Cypriot south and a breakaway Turkish Cypriot north since 1974 when Turkey invaded after an abortive coup by supporters of a union with Greece. The island joined the EU in 1974, but only the south enjoys membership benefits.

Turkey opposes any energy search by Greek Cypriots on grounds that it could undermine the rights of Turkish Cypriots to oil and gas wealth.

Ankara has responded by dispatching a warship-escorted research vessel to look for gas and oil around Cyprus and has signed a maritime border and hydrocarbon exploration deal with the Turkish Cypriots.

It has also warned that the gas search could damage long-running reunification talks.

Greek Cypriots, however, contend that the gas could act as an incentive to speed up a peace accord that would allow Turkish Cypriots to share in any gas riches and benefit Turkey as well.

"We call on Turkey to demonstrate a spirit of peace and reconciliation and to refrain from any adventurist actions and provocations that cause problems to the talks and tension in the eastern Mediterranean," said Christofias.

Under strain from Europe's financial crisis, Cyprus officials see the gas find as a potential boost to the island's euro18 billion ($23.5 billion) economy, which is forecast to grow by a meager 0.2 percent of gross domestic product next year.

Christofias said a new licensing round for more offshore exploratory drilling inside the island's 17,000 square-mile (51,000 square-kilometer) exclusive economic zone will be launched soon.

Delek has proposed a partnership with Cyprus to build a facility on the island to process and export gas found in Cypriot and Israeli waters.

3 Texas fugitives caught in Miss.

by The Associated Press Associated Press

ANGUILLA, Miss. (AP) ? A Christmas stakeout in Sharkey County led to the arrest of three men wanted in a slaying in Texas.

Sheriff Lindsey Adams tells the Vicksburg Post (http://bit.ly/sU3ORH) that the three men were arrested without incident about 11 p.m. Christmas.

They are being held in the Issaquena County jail for Texas authorities. Adams says they had waived extradition.

Adams says the security system of a stolen vehicle led authorities to the Anguilla home of a relative of two of the men.

Adams says the three were warned in the Dec. 20 robbery and shooting death of 21-year-old Trevor Matthew Kronbach at his Lewisville, Texas, home.

Adams said his deputies, Anguilla police and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation participated in the stakeout. He said at 11 p.m. officers tossed flash grenade into the house and arrested the three in a bedroom.

Those arrested were Tyron Negal Jenkins, 41; Julius Kal Smith, 35; and George Walker Jr., 33.

Lewisville police Capt. Kevin Deaver told the newspaper that the three men are believed to be from Lawrence, Kan.

Deaver said a fourth suspect was arrested shortly after the slaying at a local motel. He said Markell Oneil Hardy, 26, is charged with capital murder and is being held in the Denton County Jail pending the posting of a $250,000 bond.

Jenkins, Smith and Walker will also be charged with capital murder when they are returned to Texas, said Deaver.

"It was basically a robbery gone bad," Deaver said.

Daily iPhone App: SkySafari

SkySafari from Southern Stars is an app for the astronomy enthusiast with an iPhone. It's the perfect companion for a new telescope owner, who can use the app to help locate celestial bodies in the sky, or the casual observer who wants to know the name of that bright star cluster overhead. It's also useful for the seasoned astronomer who wants a pocket reference that's chock full of information.

The basic app (US$2.99) displays over 120,000 stars and has images of all the major planets and their moons. It also includes information on well-known asteroids and comets. SkySafari lets you look up details on each heavenly object including its catalog number and its coordinates in the sky. The app also explains the history and mythology behind each celestial object, so you can learn about the object as well as find it in the sky.

If you have an iOS device with a compass or gyroscope, you can point the app at the sky and use an augmented reality view to locate stars and planets. It even includes a night mode which preserves your dark-adjusted vision when you're out stargazing at night.

One of the best features is "Tonight's Best," which lists the best celestial objects to observe that night. The app generates this list based on your location and the local date and time. The app also has SkyWeek, a list of notable astronomical events pulled from Sky and Telescope Magazine's popular weekly column. Both Tonight's Best and SkyWeek are fantastic places to start if you're new to astronomy and don't want to miss an important event.

SkySafari is also available in a Plus ($14.99) and Pro ($59.99) version which includes information on millions of stars, deep sky objects and every comet or asteroid ever observed. If you have a motorized GoTo mount, the Plus and Pro versions also let you control your telescope using the iPhone app.

SkySafari is similar to Star Walk, another iPad and iPhone-based astronomy app. Both apps give you an augmented reality view of the sky and have information on the objects that you see. SkySafari, though, has additional features like SkyWeek that'll appeal more to the serious hobbyist than the casual observer. The depth of the information available and the option to control your telescope make SkySafari one of the leading astronomical apps available for iOS.

'Girl With The Dragon Tattoo': Why It Didn't Dominate

Experts explain to MTV News why the best-selling book didn't translate to a box-office #1.
By Eric Ditzian

Stieg Larsson's "Millennium" trilogy of crime thrillers has sold about 17 million copies in the United States alone. The first novel in the series, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," is the first book ever to sell a million digital copies. The books have become nothing short of cultural touchstones, the collective response of devoted fans to the uninitiated being something along the lines of "You haven't read 'Dragon Tattoo'? What's wrong with you?"

That's the entertainment scene onto which David Fincher's American adaptation of "Dragon Tattoo" came last week. What's more, the movie received strong critical reviews, Sony's marketing campaign was lauded by industry insiders and MTV named it the Best Movie of 2011. Yet "Dragon Tattoo" wound up with a six-day gross of just $27.8 million — the highest total of any new release but good for just fourth place overall and undoubtedly disappointing given its lofty pedigree.

So what happened?

"Maybe fans of the Stieg Larsson novel were satisfied by last year's Swedish film and weren't feeling David Fincher's Hollywood version," writes Deadline editor in chief Nikki Finke, who notes the weak opening is especially surprising given the film was the only rated-R wide-release over the Christmas season and that "adults are flocking to specialty box-office hits like Fox Searchlight's 'The Descendants' and the Weinstein Co's 'The Artist.' "

The release date could also have been a factor, even as Sony positioned "Dragon Tattoo" as the "feel-bad movie of Christmas." "The dark and violent subject matter coupled with intense competition for the attention of mature adults led to an underwhelming result over the happy and cheery yuletide holiday," says Gitesh Pandya, editor of Box Office Guru.

With no wide releases slated for the upcoming weekend, however, "Dragon Tattoo" could see its box-office haul grow significantly. Sony's distribution chief, Rory Bruer, told TheWrap that the film "is off to a good start and it's just going to get better with every day through the rest of the holiday season and well into the new year."

Finke, too, expects the film's B.O. numbers to pick up this week, and Pandya suggests "a domestic final of $100 million cannot be ruled out this early in the run as moviegoers continue to catch up on films they are interested in."

That's good news for fans of the series and of Fincher's film, who have their fingers crossed that the Oscar-nominated director gets the go-ahead to make the final two pictures in Larsson's series. As Fincher told us recently, he hopes that the first film is received well enough that he's able to revisit, in journalist Mikael Blomkvist and hacker Lisbeth Salander, "two fascinating characters who I have really come to care about."

In the end, though, the chance to see Fincher's adaptations of "The Girl Who Played With Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest" might be entirely out of the hands — or, rather, the wallets — of American moviegoers. "Ironically, the biggest factor in this sequelizing or not will come down to how well it does in foreign market — a place where the Swedish version of the film already made nearly $100 million just a couple years ago," said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. "Do overseas audiences really want to see the Hollywood version after the original is so fresh in their minds and was equally well-received?"

Check out everything we've got on "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo."

'Survivor' producer will not fight extradition to Mexico

Bruce Beresford-Redman

The former "Survivor" producer accused of killing his wife during a family vacation in Cancun will not fight against extradition to Mexico, his attorneys said Tuesday.

The attorneys for Bruce Beresford-Redman said in a statement Tuesday that their client, who maintains his innocence, will not appeal a judge's ruling that there is enough evidence to extradite him and instead will prepare to defend himself at trial.

The body of Beresford-Redman's wife, Monica, was found in a sewer at the resort hotel where the couple was vacationing with their children in April 2010.

In July, a U.S. magistrate judge ruled there was probable cause to extradite Beresford-Redman to Mexico.

The producer, who maintains he is innocent, asked U.S. District Court Judge?Philip S. Gutierrez to overturn the decision, saying there was not enough evidence to constitute probable cause for extradition.

Gutierrez denied the request Wednesday, citing "pages upon pages of competent evidence demonstrating that the fugitive committed the offense for which extradition was sought."

"The Certification [of Extraditability] summarizes the infidelity, fighting, screaming from the hotel room, the fugitive?s opportunity to dispose of the victim?s body, the ultimate location of the victim?s body (25 meters from the hotel room), the victim leaving her cellphone behind, scratches and abrasions upon the fugitive?s body, and the fugitive?s flight. All of this evidence points to homicide committed by the fugitive," he wrote.

Beresford-Redman's lawyers said in their statement that they were disappointed with the judge's decision, but added, "He is innocent and it is his hope that the court in Mexico will assure that he receives a fair trial in which, he is confident, he will be exonerated.?

Defense attorney Richard Hirsch said in a telephone interview that because the court's rulings regarding his client's extraditability have been "fairly consistent," the defense team felt that their chances of prevailing on appeal would be slim.

Hirsch said?that among the points in favor of his client's innocence are the "extremely inconsistent" scientific conclusions drawn by Mexican authorities regarding the time and place of the killing, as well as inconsistent test results of possible blood in and outside of the hotel room.

The exact timeline for extradition will depend on the Mexican government and the U.S. State Department and has not been determined, but Hirsch said it would likely be in about 60 days.

Lil Wayne Debuts Web Series ?Weezy?s Sports Corner?

Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne is sharing his love for sports. Surrounded by Green Bay Packers memorabilia, the sports fanatic introduced his new online show ?Weezy?s Sports Corner.? The idea originally started when he was in prison. He used his blog to talk sports and communicate with his fans. The unscripted web series will be posted every Saturday and viewers will be able to interact with Wayne by submitting questions. If he is ?intrigued,? he will answer them on the next show.

?My love for sports started when I was about zero years old. That means I was born a sports child,? said Wayne. ?It was mostly the women in my family. My mom and my grandmother, they were just super sporty? They loved their teams, they loved football, they loved baseball, they loved basketball.?

The Young Money chief will also be a co-host on the upcoming ESPN show ?The Sports Rap? with Rob Parker and Jalen Rose. ?It will be no holds barred,? explained Weezy.

Watch him discuss the NBA, NFL, skateboarding, and college sports in the inaugural seven episodes.

Golf: Paul Casey places Ryder Cup return high on list of targets

Published on Saturday 24 December 2011 04:28

FRUSTRATED for much of this year by a lingering foot injury, Paul Casey has set his sights on a healthy 2012 campaign, another victory on the US PGA Tour and a long coveted return to the European Ryder Cup team.

Though the Englishman won two tournaments in 2011, his form and consistency were adversely affected by a sore right toe, which was never accurately diagnosed until months later.

?It?s been incredibly frustrating,? Casey said. ?The trouble with the injury was that I picked it up in late May, battled through it and didn?t get a full diagnosis until August. By then, it was too late to take a medical [exemption] so I tried to play through it and got into a lot of bad habits.?

An 11-times winner on the European Tour, whose only PGA Tour victory came at the 2009 Houston Open, Casey played with a plate in his right shoe and his toes taped up over the last six months.

?A joint in my foot wasn?t allowing my foot to move correctly and that put pressure on my toe,? the world number 21 said. ?What?s interesting is that if I swing the club correctly and the way I used to swing it, the toe is fine. But that led to erratic golf. My weight got back on the heels and the club started to go up rather than around. Very simply, it was too steep.?

Casey has worked hard to shift his weight back on to his toes, and on to the balls of the feet.

?That?s where it should be,? he said. ?I need to do a better job of turning because I ended up hitting the ball with the hands and the arms this year a lot. I just need to put those things right.?

Of his 2011 campaign, Casey added: ?I?ve managed to win twice around the world, but not on the PGA Tour, and I?ve sort of clung on to a world ranking. I am still ranked twenty-something and that?s with playing very average golf for me. Touch wood, I can stay healthy and 2012 can be a great season.?

An inveterate goal setter whose most recent victory came at the Korean tour?s Shinhan Donghae Open in October, Casey has established clear-cut targets for next year.

?My very lofty goals I haven?t yet achieved so they?re going to be the same in 2012, and those will be the majors and World Golf [Championships] events,? he said. ?But I have other goals ... winning tournaments, winning a certain number of world ranking points, making the Ryder Cup team, being back in the winner?s circle on the PGA Tour.?

Casey is especially motivated to represent Europe at the 2012 Ryder Cup in Medinah, Illinois, having failed to qualify for the 2010 team that regained the trophy at Celtic Manor in Wales.

?I am really hungry to get back on that team,? said the 34-year-old. ?With the depth of talent in Europe, it?s probably going to be the most difficult team to make since I?ve been on tour.?

EU OKs Roche's Avastin for ovarian cancer (Reuters)

ZURICH (Reuters) ? The European Commission has approved Roche's drug Avastin for treating women with newly diagnosed, advanced ovarian cancer, offering new options to sufferers previously limited to surgery and chemotherapy.

The Swiss drugmaker is the world's largest maker of cancer drugs. The EU's approval was granted for Avastin in combination with standard chemotherapy, it said in a statement on Friday.

"Today's approval of Avastin marks the first major treatment advance in newly diagnosed ovarian cancer in 15 years," said Chief Medical Officer Hal Barron. "This is the fifth tumor type for which Avastin has been approved in Europe, making it one of few biologic drugs indicated for multiple cancers."

In two late-stage studies, Roche found that women with newly diagnosed advanced ovarian cancer who used Avastin and chemotherapy and then continued on just Avastin lived quite a bit longer without their disease getting worse compared with those who received only chemotherapy.

Ovarian cancer is the most deadly of the gynecological cancers, with 140,000 women dying from the disease each year globally, Roche said.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Xavier's slide continues

Joston Thomas and the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors handed Xavier yet another post-brawl loss, relegating the reeling Musketeers to the seventh-place game in the Diamond Head Classic.

Thomas made a layup from the baseline with 0.8 seconds left in overtime to give Hawaii an 84-82 comeback victory over No.?14 Xavier late Friday night, the Musketeers' third consecutive loss since a bench-clearing brawl Dec. 10 against Cincinnati.

Down by 15 early in the second half of the consolation semifinal, Hawaii tied it at 77 on Hauns Brereton's 3-pointer from the top of the key with 2.0 seconds left in regulation.

Thomas finished with a career-high 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting and had nine rebounds. Vander Joaquim added 20 points for Hawaii (6-5), Zane Johnson had 14, and Brereton 13.

The victory was Hawaii's first over a ranked team since it beat No.?4 Michigan State in November 2005.

A desperation heave by Xavier from about 75 feet as time expired was well short.

Tu Holloway led Xavier (8-3) with 26 points, Mark Lyons had 18 and Kenny Frease 13.

NBA

Heat waive House

The Heat waived veteran guard Eddie House, meaning rookies Mickell Gladness and Terrel Harris are on the 15-man roster to open the season.

House, 33, had left knee surgery last month and was deemed not yet ready to play.

House was drafted by the Heat in 2000 and has also played for the Los Angeles Clippers, Phoenix, New Jersey, Boston, Charlotte, Milwaukee, Sacramento and New York. House scored 35 points for Miami in the regular-season finale last season, a win at Toronto.

  • The Grizzlies have signed forward Dante Cunningham after the Charlotte Bobcats declined to match Memphis' offer to the restricted free agent. The team did not release terms of the deal. The Grizzlies also traded guard Greivis Vasquez (Maryland) to the New Orleans Hornets for guard/forward Quincy Pondexter in a move designed to boost their depth with Darrell Arthur out for the season.
  • The Oklahoma City Thunder waived guard Nate Robinson, who was a midseason acquisition from the Boston Celtics last season and appeared in four games for the Thunder. He averaged 3.3 points and 1.5 assists.

ELSEWHERE

  • Purdue has extended football coach Danny Hope's contract for two additional years, through Dec. 31, 2016. Details are being finalized. Purdue went 5-7 under Hope in 2009, then 4-8 in an injury-filled 2010. The Boilermakers (6-6) will play Western Michigan in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl on Dec. 27 at Ford Field in Detroit.
  • Orange Bowl officials said they've scrapped a planned sponsorship deal with Camacho Cigars. Larry Wahl, an Orange Bowl spokesman, said in an email that after mutual review, it was determined it would not be appropriate to go forward with the sponsorship.
  • Former Atalanta captain Cristiano Doni has reportedly acknowledged fixing Serie B soccer games in Italy involving his team and said his club knew nothing about it. Doni was among 16 people arrested across Italy on Monday in an investigation into match-fixing and illegal betting on games.

Beacon Community Services takes on WorkBC career help contract

Published: December 20, 2011 5:00 PM

People seeking employment services on Salt Spring will be visiting a new office operating under a new service provider starting in April 2012, when Beacon Community Services takes on the contract for a WorkBC Employment Services Centre.

Beacon Community Services announced its successful bid for the contract under the provincial government?s new Employment Program of British Columbia on Dec. 13. The not-for-profit company replaces CARE (Career Assistance & Resources for Employment), a branch of the Ethos Career Management Group.

Kerry Readshaw, media spokesperson for Beacon, said the WorkBC model is slightly different than what has been available on Salt Spring to date because it?s a move toward ?one-stop shopping? in employment services. Centre workers will be able to assess clients? skills and needs, determine their eligibility for various programs and help them secure and maintain employment.

Readshaw said clients who are currently working with other employment offices will find the WorkBC model will continue to meet their needs throughout the transition. New clients will find things ?a little crisper,? she said.

Readshaw noted that Beacon Community Services has already been providing some employment services to Gulf Islands clients and will continue to work with those people. The group is currently in discussion with Salt Spring Community Services to find a shared office space, to be announced early in the new year.

The new WorkBC office is scheduled to open April 2, 2012.

Startup Brings Ecommerce Directly to Magazine Websites (Mashable)

The Spark of Genius Series highlights a unique feature of startups and is made possible by Microsoft BizSpark. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here. Name: 72Lux

[More from Mashable: You Know Your Klout Score. What?s Your Kred Score?]

Quick Pitch: Shop across many online retailers with a single checkout and shipping fee.

Genius Idea: Bringing that service to third-party publishers.

[More from Mashable: Keas Is Like FarmVille for Corporate Wellness]

Shopping for women's apparel and accessories across different retailers isn't as difficult as it was a few years ago, thanks to search tools such as ShopStyle and Google Product Search. Checking out, however, can still be a chore when you're dealing with multiple site registrations and shipping fees.

72Lux eliminates much of the hassle by allowing you to shop from more than 900 retailers from its website, including such recognizable brands as Bloomingdales, Macy's and Yoox. You can browse (by designer, garment type, color and size), search and select different goods from retailers, and check out only once. What's more, you'll pay a flat shipping fee of $15, although returns have to be addressed specifically to individual retailers.

The startup takes a cut of every sale, which founder and CEO Heather Marie says is greater than the 2-3% affiliates usually receive.

That's a promising business in and of itself, but what's even more promising is the ecommerce solution 72Lux is developing for third-party publishers. As we've seen, many retailers are developing content offerings on their websites to make them more like shoppable magazines. Now, certain consumer magazines -- Marie declined to disclose which -- are working to allow customers to shop directly from their sites, instead of referring them elsewhere to purchase. The first launch will be announced in Q1 2012, Marie says.

That could open up a significant new revenue stream for publishers, although it's not yet clear what effect that will have on magazines and their readers. Enabling readers to quickly and seamlessly purchase the goods they're reading about is, yes, a convenience, but there's also the risk that readers will begin to question recommendations for products that publishers have such an obvious, vested interest in.

72Lux has raised $300,000 in seed funding to date and is currently raising its next round.
