Jack White abruptly ends NYC show, drawing crowd's wrath

White (Jim Dyson/Getty)

Jack White abruptly ended his sold-out show at Radio City Music Hall on Saturday night, drawing the ire of fans who saw the former White Stripes frontman perform for just 45 minutes without an encore.

White, who is touring behind his recent solo album "Blunderbuss," was apparently unhappy with the historic New York venue's sound and left the stage, leaving 5,000 or so concertgoers--most of whom paid at least $40 per ticket--disillusioned.

Many fans, thinking it was an unusually early encore or setbreak, remained in the concert hall, some clapping and cheering to encourage White's return to the stage. But when ushers began to inform them that the show was over, their disillusionment turned to anger, and things got ugly.

"F--- Jack White!" some chanted as they left Radio City. Others returned concert merchandise they had just bought.

"I've been waiting for an encore for longer than Jack White's set," Jeremy Current wrote on Twitter.

"I just paid $90 a ticket to see Jack White play for less than an hour?" Brian Pluta tweeted. "F--- that guy."

"Jack White does NOT DESERVE to play in NEW YORK," John Kushay wrote. "EVER again."

It's unclear why White ended the show so abruptly. Some speculated he was irked by a less-than-enthusiastic response from the audience ("Jesus Christ, is this an NPR convention?" White asked at one point) or what Buzzfeed said were "a huge amount" of the tickets that went to scalpers. Others, though, claimed it was the poor acoustics.

"Mystery solved," Hunter Walker, a reporter for the New York Observer, tweeted. "Security guy [at] Radio City said Jack White 'wasn't happy with the sound.'"

Earlier this week during a performance in Boston, White apparently complained about the sound, too.

"Jack White is a control freak," the Boston Herald's Jed Gottlieb wrote in his review. "Yes, he's obsessed with a sound, image and branding devoted to making him look like a mad genius. As he should be, that's what's rock 'n' roll is about." White eventually "relaxed into the night," the Herald said, with "a set of new songs, White Stripes classics, Raconteurs gems and a Hank Williams cover."

The 37-year-old Detroit native is something of a rock-and-roll diva, banning cellphones at his concerts. "All musicians can't stand looking out from the stage and seeing a thousand blue rectangles staring back at you," White told the New York Post in a recent interview. "No one likes it--you can ask anyone."

What is clear is that Saturday's show was the shortest of White's current tour. According to Gigwise.com, his performances usually last about two hours, encores included.

White is scheduled to play Radio City Music Hall again on Sunday.

Apparent Afghan 'insider' kills NATO troop, civilian

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? An apparent insider attack by Afghan forces has killed a NATO service member and an international civilian contractor with the military alliance, the coalition said Sunday.

The attack Saturday in eastern Afghanistan also killed or wounded Afghan soldiers, the NATO alliance said in a statement. It did not provide further details, including the nationalities. The international coalition typically waits for national authorities to announce their own dead.

An Afghan military spokesman declined to comment.

Afghan soldiers and policemen ? or militants in their uniforms ? have gunned down more than 50 foreign troops so far this year, eroding the trust between coalition forces and their Afghan partners. An equal number of Afghan policemen and soldiers also died in these attacks, giving them reason as well to be suspicious of possible infiltrators within their ranks.

The attacks are taking a toll on the partnership between international and Afghan forces, prompting the U.S. military to restrict operations with small-sized Afghan units earlier this month.

The close contact ? with coalition forces working side by side with Afghan troops as advisers, mentors and trainers ? is a key part of the U.S. strategy for putting the Afghans in the lead as the U.S. and other nations prepare to pull out their last combat troops at the end of 2014, just 27 months away.

Common Myths About Contraception | Health | iDiva.com

?

?

Whether it?s generally prepping yourself on the different kinds of contraceptives available in the market or zeroing down on the right birth-control method for yourself, thanks to common myths ? misconceptions and hearsay about the various contraceptives and birth-control methods, you could be exposed to a lot of incorrect information. If you don?t want that to become detrimental in your decision-making process, why not debunk all those silly notions you?ve nurtured about contraception and learn the facts!

Myth: Birth control pills make you gain weight
Fact: You?ve probably read this on the internet or heard it from a friend who swears they?re the reason why she has piled up those extra kilos! But it?s false. Though the pill has been around for almost 50 years in the market, even today, most women believe that these pills are the culprit for any excessive weight gain. Birth control pills contain two synthetic female hormones ? estrogen and progesterone. Though they are known to cause fluid retention, in today?s modern birth control pills, these hormones are in very small doses. So they do not make you gain weight.

Myth: You don?t need to use a contraceptive, if he pulls out before ejaculation
Fact: No matter how quick and efficient he is in bed, ?withdrawal? is definitely not a reliable method, if you want to prevent pregnancy. The fluid secreted by a man for lubrication before ejaculation, also contain sperms. So even if he ejaculates near the vagina, there?s a chance it can lead to pregnancy. If you are planning on using this method over an extended period of time, you should know that it isn?t 100 per cent safe.

Myth: You won?t get pregnant, if you have unprotected sex during your periods
Fact: While the chances of getting pregnant when you are menstruating are reduced significantly, it doesn?t mean that you are in a completely safe zone. If you are a fertile woman, who has reached sexual maturity, there?s always a chance you can get pregnant, if you indulge in unprotected intercourse.

Myth: Two condoms are better than one
Fact: If you think two condoms will give you ?double? protection, think again. Wearing two condoms at one go, increases the chances of friction and can lead to tearing, and is hence more unsafe than wearing just one! Also, if they don?t fit right together, they might slip of. Always use one, the right way.

Myth: Contraception isn?t necessary for women over 35
Fact: As women enter their late 30s, they may believe that their fertility has declined and might be tempted to stop using any form of contraceptive. But that?s a misconception. While after a certain age, fertility does start waning, it doesn?t decline to the extent that you don?t need to use any kind of birth-control method. As long as you have your periods, you could still conceive.??

Myth: Not having an orgasm can prevent pregnancy
Fact: If you think averting an orgasm will help you prevent a pregnancy, you?re definitely compromising on pleasure for nothing! Pregnancy occurs when a sperm from the man fertilises an egg from the woman. It is not necessary for the woman to have an orgasm to get pregnant.

Letters | Health care, the presidential race, pets - KansasCity.com

Health care in Kansas

Senate President Steve Morris recently stated every Senate Republican supported the Health Care Freedom Act, a bill that amends state statute. He conveniently omitted the more important proposal to amend the Kansas Constitution, the Kansas Health Care Freedom Amendment, which would have allowed a vote on this measure. The amendment was held up for three years in the Senate Judiciary Committee by Republican leadership until finally a vote was scheduled for the floor this year.Once the debate began, a motion was made to send the bill back to committee, thus avoiding debate. The motion, which failed, was supported by Republican senators Pete Brungardt, Jay Emler, Jeff Longbine, Carolyn McGinn, Steve Morris, Tim Owens, Roger Reitz, Vicki Schmidt, Ruth Teichman, Dwayne Umbarger and John Vratil. In 2010, Sen. Mary Pilcher-Cook moved to pull the amendment out of committee, where it was being held up by Senate leadership. She simply wanted to debate the measure, but her motion failed, with many Republicans, including Morris, opposing it.I find it odd that Sen. Morris encourages citizens to vote, while he worked to deny Kansans the opportunity to cast a ballot on this important amendment designed to fight the federal takeover of our health care system. Derrick Sontag TopekaConsumer-driven U.S.A few recent letter writers have touched on an important economic point: Our president and our Congress do not create permanent, sustained private-sector jobs.During this election cycle, however, we?re hearing people tout themselves as job creators. They?re in local races in commercial after commercial and stump speech after stump speech. It feeds voter expectations, and it?s probably impolitic for any candidate to do otherwise. But the reality is that outside of instituting more stimulus programs or a government expansion or declaring another war, government is not really the remedy for jobs, especially private-sector jobs.Consumers are the remedy. Simply put: Consumers create jobs, and when consumers decide to spend more on products and services, more businesses will hire.No one builds a warehouse and fills it with new employees and equipment without there first being consumers generating a demand along with a predictable income stream. The remedy is not a political candidate. It is us as a collective of consumers, confident in our own country and the future and moving things forward as always. Robert Barnes Kansas CityObama treated unfairlyConservative radio host Mark Levin says this of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney:He loves his country, he believes in America, he does not want to fundamentally change this country, he is religious and he is a family man, and naturally President Barack Obama is just the opposite of all of these virtues.Levin?s hatred of Mr. Obama spews through his microphone every night. If Levin were forced to pay everyone a quarter for how often he has referred to the president as a Marxist, for example, we would all be millionaires. Naturally, he is angry about the president?s political rhetoric. Levin thinks it unfair that Obama attacks the GOP and its candidate. So here is the way it is supposed to work.Obama, as president, may not campaign but instead must remain in the Oval Office running the country. Only the Republicans will be allowed to run negative ads and speak of nasty ?truths? about President Obama. Even during the debates, Mr. Obama must remain mute, and if he does not do so, he will be gagged. Michal Betz Wichita47 percenter?s fearsI am a middle-aged man who for years has been stricken with muscular dystrophy. I am what Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney refers to as a member of the 47 percent who pay no income taxes. When I was physically able to work, I paid my fair share of taxes. Now that I am severely disabled (so disabled that my brother had to type this letter for me), I find that Mr. Romney opposes my ?entitlement? to ?food? for the last days I have on earth.I fear that if Mr. Romney is elected, it will not be a biological disease that takes my life but rather the denial of nourishment to a severely disabled body by a man who cannot ?elegantly state? why he wants to kill me. Mike Milum IndependenceInclude all AmericansI?m a 68-year-old veteran of the Marine Corps and have been working and paying Social Security taxes since I was 16. I am now receiving Social Security (which I earned), am now paying taxes and am a registered independent. And, apparently unlike Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, I think the president of the United States should ?worry about? all of the citizens of the United States, not just rich contributors in Boca Raton, Fla. Joe McMillian OlatheLee Judge cartoonThe Boy Scouts are one of the greatest youth groups in the United Sates (I will go as far to say the world), helping young boys become men and teaching them skills such as leadership and duty along an emphasis on moral values and ethics. Before you judge them, Lee Judge (9-21, Editorial cartoon), let me ask you this. What have you done for the youth of our planet? Patrick Moylan Kansas City Romney, low-pay workRepublican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, have promised 12 million new jobs in their first four years in office. I wonder, will they be good-paying jobs? That?s doubtful because former governor Romney has backed away from supporting an increase in the minimum wage. Will these jobs offer medical coverage? Probably not. Former governor Romney wants to do away with the Affordable Care Act. How about other benefits? Not realistic.Collective bargaining will disappear when the Republican crusade to abolish labor unions succeeds. Will we still be able to celebrate Labor Day by the end of a Romney-Ryan term? What do you think? Gerald K. Gentry, Ph.D. OlatheReport without biasMuch of the media is doing a tremendous disservice to our country by the biased coverage it is giving. Why is The Kansas City Star giving so little coverage on the protests in Pakistan, Egypt, Libya, North Africa and various other countries?Could it be that the news media, in their endeavor to shape and turn U.S. elections, do not find it newsworthy? Another troubling factor is most of the letters printed on the opinion page are in favor of ?their? candidate. The news should be reported objectively and not with the sole purpose of disparaging one candidate while enhancing another. American citizens deserve better. Rose Soptic Roeland Park Kudos to The StarCongratulations to The Star, to reporters Mark Morris and Brian Burnes and to everyone else at the newspaper who played a role in the ?Killer Love? series last week. It was dramatic, riveting and clearly written. If newspapers want to get more readers, I think it?s serial stories like these that they should shoot for. The only criticism I have is that the sketch that accompanied the first installment ? of a wide-eyed and thunderstruck Teresa Stone after finding her husband?s body ? probably was an inaccurate portrayal. As readers found out in the last installment, Teresa had come to loathe her husband, Randy Stone, and wanted him dead. Her response might well have been a fist pump and an emphatic, ?Yes!? Jim Fitzpatrick Kansas CityPets add value to lifeWe all know that pets lower blood pressure and become like one of the family many times over. I?ve been owned by cats all my life. So when my husband died, his cat went into mourning. She didn?t eat or drink for days, cried constantly and slept on his old jacket for a year.I thought I was going to lose her. However, in time, she shifted her grief into affection. Now, she is never more than inches from my side, she greets me at the top of the stairs when I come home and she curls up with me and a good book. She has licked away my tears, has been my sounding board when I vent anger or disgust and loves me, no strings attached.I cannot imagine my life without her. All our pets ask is for food, shelter and affection.I have been humbled by her simple affections.Have you hugged your pet today? Alice Brandom Kansas City Truth from politiciansWouldn?t it be wonderful if one day God decided that all politicians from that day on could only tell the truth? There would be a lot of red faces. Featuring Guest: Annmarie Kelly and her new release - Flutey Words...

?Annmarie Kelly talks about writing...

I started writing in high school with papers for English classes. In my twenties, while I was going through a lot of personal angst, most of my writing was in my personal journals. In my thirties I wrote articles for magazines. At first I wrote for esoteric publications and then, after starting my consulting business, I wrote business-related articles for a variety of publications. I was really, really proud of my first check for a freelance article! That gave me the confidence to write a book about my marriage. Unfortunately, at that time, I couldn?t find a publisher who would consider it. So, in 1998, I boxed it up and put it away.

Then, almost fifteen years ago, still missing my undergraduate degree, I made the decision to go back to college. It was a curriculum designed for people like me who were way past ?traditional? college age. It began with a required first course for research science. Each week I turned in the required paper on some topic I researched. While my grades were in the B+/A category, I somehow presumed that I was just keeping up with the rest of the class. After all, we weren?t kids just starting out. But a conversation with the instructor turned things around. She told me that I was one of two students in her class whose writing was head and shoulders above the rest of the class. She also told me that I had a talent and should do something with it.

I graduated, magna cum laude, in 2001. The teacher, Gloria Williams, retired a few years later. We still keep in touch and have a breakfast together from time to time. If I hadn?t returned to finish my college degree, I might never have never written a book that could actually get published. Sometimes, as one of my mentors tells me frequently, it?s all about showing up!

Because I offer workshops, teleseminars, etc. around the subject matter of Victorious Woman!, I developed the Victorious Woman! Workbook, Victory by Design. It?s being redesigned to accommodate an e-book format that will include links, podcasts, etc.

That book that?s been in storage since 1998 came out the box last year and is in the process of being finished ? finally! What I?ve noticed is that the market for my ?different twist? on marriage is broader now. The Five Year Marriage is generating more interest and I think it will be better accepted by the public in 2013 than it would have been in 1998. To everything there is a season!

Real Women ? Real Stories ? Real Challenges ? Real Victories

What?s a woman to do? If she makes a bad choice or gets thrown one of life's curveballs, is she forever doomed?

Author Annmarie Kelly says "NO!" and proves it with compelling real life stories of women who faced and overcame seemingly overwhelming life challenges. This powerfully moving book overflows with intelligence, understanding, emotion and true grit.

Kelly explains victory as the stretch you make out of your comfort zone and into the greater, fuller expression of who you really are ? your authentic self. She demonstrates victory by taking you inside the lives of nine distressed women and showing you how they became victorious. You are likely to recognize something of yourself woven in each of these stories; each one will inspire and encourage you to forge your own victory over whatever is challenging you right now. At the end of each woman?s chapter you?ll find soul-searching questions that you must ask yourself to insure your own victories.

Author Kelly concludes the stories with a "lessons learned" chapter. Gleaning the best from each Victorious Woman, from the many other women she interviewed and from her own intriguing life challenges, Kelly describes the FOUR LIFESTYLES that either support you in victory or sabotage you, and the SIX SKILLS every woman has to learn to be in control of her SELF. She also gives you, her readers, the Victorious Woman Model to help you figure out what you need at different stages of challenges. The result is a book that is part inspiration, part motivation and part skill building. Some have called Victorious Woman "a blueprint for life" and "a practical approach to taking control of your life."

Since its first publication, many women say that they keep Victorious Woman! on their book shelf for reference or on their nightstand for comfort at the end of a long day. This "celebration of life" is an encouraging and enlightening read for women who want to create their own personal and professional victories.

Author Annmarie Kelly is a professional speaker, workshop leader and victory strategist, who has firsthand knowledge of the transformative power which determination and motivation, the stuff of victory, can have in a person?s life.

Growing up in her Italian-Catholic home, Kelly wasn?t a natural go getter but rather a shy and introverted girl ? a ?good girl? who felt invisible and insignificant and powerless to deal with family problems including alcoholism, sibling abuse and mental illness.

In her early twenties, a broken engagement and her father?s reaction to it, caused Annmarie to look at her life and where she was going. After a couple ?dark? years, she realized she had a purpose but that she was following a path that would only give her more of what she already had: disappointments, regrets and lost opportunities. Annmarie understood that she needed to make a change; she decided to start on a new track.

Through the rest of her twenties and thirties, step-by-step, she changed the way she thought about herself and her future, set major goals, and let go of many of the limitations that were holding her back, from kicking the undesired habits of smoking cigarettes and being a couch potato to getting honest about her own sabotaging behaviors. She also let go of people and environments that became obstacles to her efforts.

While leaving the comfort of the familiar for something better was what she wanted, it wasn?t easy. But in time the effort paid off. The decisions Annmarie made then have enabled her to BE more and DO more than she ever thought she could and HAVE more of the kind of life that, on her old path, would only have been a dream.

Not content to keep that kind of empowerment and success to herself, Annmarie Kelly has made it her life?s mission to help other women find the same confidence, inner power, and most importantly the ?feminine victory? within. Whatever she does, whether she?s speaking, teaching, writing, blogging or coaching, she shows women just how much power they have over their own lives, encourages them to LIVE VICTORIOUSLY - out loud and in living color ? and shows them the skills they need to do it!

Annmarie Kelly owns and manages SkillBuilder Systems, a training and development firm specializing in management development and communication skills. She is also the founder of The Victorious Woman Project which focuses on the information, resources and skill building which help women empower themselves so they can live their best life.

Annmarie is a member of the National Speakers Association (NSA), the Greater Philadelphia chapter of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTDPhl), The Press Club PA and the National Association of Female Executives.

Report claims state health insurance reform not working ? Health ...

AUGUSTA, Maine ? A Republican-backed state law aimed at lowering health insurance premiums in Maine is being panned in a new report by affordable health care advocates.

But supporters of the law, especially those who wrote and co-sponsored it in the Maine Legislature, say the law is working but needs to be fully implemented before anyone draws conclusions about its effectiveness.

Supporters say key provisions of the law, including one that allows people to buy health insurance across state lines, have not yet gone into effect.

In its report issued earlier this month, Consumers for Affordable Health Care examined health insurance rate renewal information at the Bureau of Insurance. The report focused on renewal rates for insurance customers in the individual and small-group markets.

What they found did not bode well for the new law?s effectiveness, said Joe Ditre, executive director of the consumer group.

Key findings showed 54 percent of individual policyholders in Maine saw premium increases, while 90 percent of small business policyholders saw rates go up. Small-group plans cover up to 50 employees.

The report also draws attention to a new $4 assessment tacked on to all health insurance policies in Maine as a result of the law.

That assessment is used to build an annual fund of nearly $21 million that a new nonprofit organization , the Maine Guaranteed Access Reinsurance Association, also created by the law, uses to reinsure the most costly or high-risk clients on the books of Maine insurance companies.

?No one knows they are paying this tax,? Ditre said. ?They are being taxed, and this is all under the radar.?

But advocates for the law say the new reinsurance pools are the reason Anthem, one of the state?s largest health insurance providers, asked for an average rate increase of only 1.7 percent this year.

According to a statement on the Bureau of Insurance?s website, that represents $11 million in savings for Anthem because of the anticipated ability to use the MGARA funds to pay down high-risk claims.

Without the new nonprofit and the reinsurance pool, the company would have asked for a 21 percent increase, according to officials and documents filed with the bureau.

A 21 percent hike for Anthem would not necessarily have been approved by the bureau, according to Doug Dunbar, a spokesman for the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, which includes the Bureau of Insurance.

?It?s not possible to indicate whether a different rate increase request from Anthem would have been approved,? Dunbar wrote in an email.

The Maine Guaranteed Access Reinsurance Association board, as defined by the law, is largely controlled by insurance companies doing business in Maine, Ditre said.

Of the 11 members of the board, five are insurance company representatives, another is an insurance broker, another is a small-business person ? whose small business is in insurance. The other board members include a car sales businessman, two representatives from the medical community and a former credit union president.

Advocates for the law say it creates a better ?free market? approach to health insurance, but opponents say it?s little more than corporate welfare and an annual $21 million subsidy or bailout for some of the most profitable companies doing business in Maine.

The law is written in a way that requires insurance companies to pay the fees collected, but it also allows them not to disclose or itemize the fee.

The law also allows the new nonprofit to increase the fee, as needed, by an additional $2 per month, up to $6 per month per person insured.

Ditre believes MGARA will almost certainly increase the assessment. He said actuarial studies estimate the true cost of insuring the highest-risk clients in Maine is closer to $65 million, which is three times what MGARA is currently collecting for that purpose.

?Essentially, what we have here in MGARA is a group that gets $21 million in public money with no public oversight,? Ditre said. ?This Legislature delegated its authority to increase the tax by half ? by an additional $2 per member per month.?

The law changed the way insurance companies are allowed to set rates and allows them to charge more based on location, age and risk assessment. Older people in more rural places are the most vulnerable to the rate increases, and businesses with small-group policies are being hard-hit, Ditre said.

Only the small-group policies that include larger numbers of young workers, mostly in southern Maine, have experienced small rate decreases.

Some rates go down

Supporters of the law say rate increases overall are less than what they?ve been each year prior to the law and that prior to the law there were no notable rate decreases.

So the law is moving in the right direction and indeed working, according to one of the co-authors of the bill, state Rep. Les Fossel, R-Alna.

?One claim ? that 54 percent of individual policyholders saw higher premiums ? neglects to add that nearly 100 percent of individual policyholders saw increases in previous years,? Fossel wrote in a guest column in the Portland Press Herald on Sept. 11. ?Nor does the report mention that nearly 87 percent of individual policyholders now have access to lower cost alternatives that meet their needs.?

Dunbar, the department spokesman, backs up some of Fossel?s statement, noting, ?Premiums have been increasing significantly for years.?

Dunbar said the rate data for the fourth quarter of 2011 and the first quarter of 2012 show that 10.6 percent of those in small-group plans across the state saw their rates go down.

?For the same period last year (before the new law), only 3.26 percent of small groups experienced a decrease in rates,? Dunbar wrote. ? While rates can vary significantly among groups for many reasons (e.g., changes in group size or medical trend inflation), the overall change since the enactment of PL 90 is a 6.9 percent increase in the number of small groups experiencing rate relief.?

An analysis by the state?s Bureau of Insurance also touts the reduction in the rate of increase for premiums, but it highlights how rates were still going up for most policyholders post PL 90.

Fossel and others have argued that the changes have created a new host of insurance products that allow people to buy the most affordable plan to cover their needs, but Ditre said what?s really happening is people are being left short of the coverage they need.

?People are in the position where they are going to drop their coverage or choose much, much higher deductibles ? all which create a windfall for the insurance industry,? Ditre said. ?They get rid of their higher risks by rating people out of coverage or people change to coverage that is inadequate, and they?ve got to pay a premium for that for which they see very little benefit. Again, it?s a tremendous windfall for the insurance industry.?

More time needed?

The situation for small business is not getting any better, Ditre said. ?It?s ironic to me that they are saying give it time, when in fact those legislators who said we need more time to study this law were told specifically by the bill?s sponsors: ?These issues have been studied to death. We don?t need to take any more time. We know what needs to be done and free-market competition will lower these rates.??

Eric Cioppa, superintendent of the Maine Insurance Bureau, agrees with those who say it will take more time to fully understand the impacts of the new law on insurance rates.

He said it?s too soon to tell whether the law is achieving some of its other goals, including drawing more people into the health insurance market in Maine, which could ultimately bring rates down.

Cioppa said Consumers for Affordable Health Care?s report failed to mention that insurance providers will pay premiums to MGARA for any clients they want covered in the reinsurance pool. Those premiums are paid at 90 cents on the dollar, he said.

He said part of that formulation is that MGARA isn?t in the business to make money but to maximize the $4 assessment to cover claims. Ultimately, that relief is aimed at reducing rates in the individual insurance market, he said.

He said the thing that is driving insurance rates skyward in Maine and elsewhere is medical costs.

?I?m not casting aspersions on anyone, but the medical costs and the medical trends ? I think everyone acknowledges there?s still work to do on that,? Cioppa said.

Australia: NSW announces sandtiger shark protection moves - Shark ...

Media Release

Katrina Hodgkinson MP
Minister for Primary Industries
Minister for Small Business

Thursday 20 September 2012

????????????

Minister for Primary Industries Katrina Hodgkinson today announced new management arrangements to protect the critically endangered grey nurse shark.

Ms Hodgkinson said the new rules are simple for recreational fishers and scuba divers to follow while also ensuring the conservation needs of this species of shark are met now and into the future.

?Consistent with the NSW Liberals & Nationals pre-election commitment, Labor?s shambolic fishing rules were revoked and extensive consultation undertaken,? Ms Hodgkinson said.

Some of the key changes include:

  • restrictions on the use of baited hooks around key breeding areas for grey nurse sharks along the NSW coastline;
  • delisting the Bass Point critical habitat site in Shellharbour; and
  • protecting a small site near Mermaid Reef off Crowdy Head.

?These rules have been developed after more than a year of public and stakeholder consultation, and review of more than 2000 submissions,? Ms Hodgkinson said.

?Recreational fishers are still able to fish in these areas with a wide range of methods such as spinning, trolling, jigging, hand gathering and crabbing but are not permitted to use baited hooks, which is the leading cause of death for these marine animals.

?The scuba diving regulations will be revoked and replaced with a Code of Conduct for diving with grey nurse sharks.

?There will be a compliance advisory period of twelve months while the new measures are phased in.

?An educational and advisory campaign including new boat ramp signage will also be rolled out, and the full details are available at www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries

?I would like to thank the stakeholders and the members of the community who contributed to the review.

?I am confident this will strike a balanced approach that will both protect grey nurse sharks while continuing to provide recreational fishing and diving opportunities? Ms Hodgkinson said.

In Spain, economic crisis fans Catalan separatism

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's economic crisis is exposing deep regional fault lines. Among Catalans on Barcelona's boulevards the talk is of independence, and Madrid is worried.

This week the king and prime minister called for national unity to get Spain through its worst downturn in decades, King Juan Carlos recalling the spirit that built a democracy after dictator Francisco Franco's death in 1975.

Popular momentum for independence has never been stronger in Catalonia, a wealthy region in northeastern Spain that generates one fifth of the country's economic output and is home to 16 percent of Spaniards.

More than half of Catalans say they want a separate state, and hundreds of thousands marched in Barcelona last week - the biggest such show of separatist fervor.

Still, few see a rapid road to an independent Catalonia, a dream rooted in the Middle Ages when Barcelona was a Mediterranean trade centre with a parliament.

"It's going to be a difficult and long process ... For us to get it they would have to have a referendum, and they're not going to give us that," said Jose Maria Prats, a nurse who joined the march.

The upsurge in Catalan separatism is founded on a conviction that Madrid is draining the region financially.

The central government collects most taxation payments then redistributes them to Spain's 17 self-governing regions, which run their own schools and hospitals. Each year Catalans say they pay 16 billion euros more in taxes than the regional government spends.

"The crisis has shown that Spain's regional financing model does not work. There is no doubt we need to advance towards a federal system of taxation," said Jose Ignacio Conde-Ruiz, deputy head of think-tank FEDEA.

The flare-up in Catalonia has come at a difficult time for Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy who is struggling to bring Spain's deficit under control and resisting following Greece, Ireland and Portugal into an international bailout.

He has threatened to intervene in regions that cannot control their budgets. Catalonia is likely to miss its deficit target this year and has had to ask Madrid for a 5 billion euro bailout to meet its debt redemptions.

DIFFERENCES RUN DEEP

With an economy about the size of Portugal's, Catalonia houses global firms including toll road, telecoms and airport operator Abertis and healthcare group Grifols.

Children are schooled in Catalan and Spanish is treated as a foreign language in the home region of Joan Miro, Salvador Dali and Antoni Gaudi. Catalans banned bullfighting in a 2010 referendum highlighting their difference from the rest of Spain.

Such proud expressions of regional identity were suppressed during Franco's rule from 1939-1975, and the regions only won significant autonomy under the 1978 constitution that marked the country's return to democracy.

Catalan President Artur Mas, of the conservative Convergence and Union, or CiU, up until last week an advocate of autonomy but not of independence, has fallen into line with public opinion. He says he will work toward a referendum like the one Scotland may hold in 2014 on breaking its 305-year union with England.

"We went one way for 30 years and now there's a change in direction ... Catalonia needs instruments of state," he told Madrid's political and business elite at a forum last week.

In Madrid, economists scoff at the Catalan argument that they contribute more in taxes, saying any wealthy region of any country could say the same. Economists in Catalonia say the gap between the money flowing to Madrid and the money flowing back to the region is wider than in Scotland.

Even if it had to pay for its own military and diplomatic corps, the financial benefit to Catalonia would be equivalent to seven percent of its GDP, says Elisenda Paluzie, dean of the economics and business school at the University of Barcelona.

Mas and Rajoy are scheduled to meet on Thursday to discuss Mas's proposals to free Catalonia from the common tax regime.

Secession would complicate Catalonia's relationship with Europe. The European Union says an independent Catalonia seceded it would have to reapply for membership of the bloc.

US adds cancer to list of illnesses linked to 9/11 attacks

By NBC News and wire services

Updated at 5:15 p.m. ET: The federal government on Monday added 14 categories of cancer to the list of illnesses linked to the 9/11 terror attacks, which brings added coverage to rescue workers and people living near ground zero on Sept. 11, 2001.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health approved the additions to the list of illnesses covered in the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, which were proposed in June. The updated regulations take effect 30 days after the ruling is published in the Federal Register.

See more on this story on NBCNewYork.com

The decision "marks an important step in the effort to provide needed treatment and care to 9/11 responders and survivors," said Dr. John Howard, administrator of the World Trade Center Health Program established by the Zadroga law.?

The Zadroga Act ? named after NYPD Detective James Zadroga, who died at age 34 after working at ground zero ? was signed into law?nearly two years ago. Despite the hundreds of sick responders, the act did not cover cancer because of a supposed lack of scientific evidence linking cancer to ground zero toxins.

"We are getting sick in record numbers,"?said Ray Pfeiffer, a first responder who was diagnosed three years ago with kidney cancer. He said it has been a struggle to pay for expensive medications not fully covered by his insurance.

"It's fantastic news," he said of the expanded list of covered illnesses.

About 400 residents and rescue workers have died from cancer since 9/11,?according to the New York Post.

With cancer included in the program more victims are likely to seek compensation, which could cause individual awards to be reduced as officials divide up the $2.77 billion fund.

"They?re going to add cancers, but are they going to add more money to the fund?" Thomas "T.J." Gilmartin, who suffers from lung disease and sleep apnea, said to the Post. "It?s crazy. Every time, we gotta fight. It?s two years since Obama signed that bill, and nobody?s got 10 cents."

"We fought long and hard to make sure that our 9/11 heroes suffering from cancers obtained from their work at ground zero get the help they deserve," U.S. Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles E. Schumer, both of New York, said in a statement. "Today's announcement is a huge step forward that will provide justice and support to so many who are now suffering from cancer and other illnesses. We will press on - with advocates, the community, and our partners in government - to ensure that all those who suffered harm from 9/11 and its aftermath get the access to the program they so desperately need."

Family photo via NY Daily News / AP File

In this undated file photo, New York City Police Det. James Zadroga, left, holds his daughter Tylerann. Fifty cancers will be added to the Zadroga Act, which was named after the detective--who died of respiratory failure in Jan. 2006 after working at ground zero.

Last week, the New York City Fire Department added nine names to the 55 already etched on a wall honoring members who have died of illnesses related to ground zero rescue and recovery work, Reuters reported.

Some estimates put the overall death toll from 9/11-related illness at more than 1,000, according to Reuters. At least 20,000 ground zero workers are being treated across the country and 40,000 are being monitored by the World Trade Center Health Program, Reuters reported.

Tuesday marks the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks.?

Last fall, the September 11 Memorial at ground zero finally opened in the footprints of the original towers. Since then, more than 4 million people have visited.

Financial, security and design setbacks have delayed the redevelopment of the World Trade Center in the past decade. A recent project audit indicates that overall site redevelopment costs have grown to nearly $15 billion.

One World Trade Center is nearing completion and is expected to open in 2014.

NBCNewYork.com's Brynn Gingras and Reuters contributed to this report.

Twitter Reportedly Discontinuing Development of Official Twitter for Mac Client

Mac App Store TwitterAccording to a tweet from the well-connected MG Siegler, Twitter is discontinuing development of Twitter for Mac, though it will still remain available.

Word is that Twitter made the call today: Twitter for Mac is done. They won?t kill it outright, but no further updates. Goodbye, old friend.

The decision is a curious one, considering the recent changes Twitter made to its API agreements that make it more difficult for third parties to create Twitter apps.

Tweetbot recently discontinued its public Alpha program for Tweetbot for Mac because of the changes, and it remains to be seen what will happen to OS X Twitter clients going forward. Twitter for Mac originally launched on the Mac App Store in 2011, after Twitter purchased Tweetie and turned its Mac client into the official Twitter client.

One of the biggest complaints made about Twitter for Mac recently is its lack of support for the MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

Buy a Low Priced Home or Refinance in Nevada

If you are having trouble making payments on your home these days, you are not alone. A recent report from RealtyTrac, Inc. says foreclosure filings are up 48% from a year ago. States which have been hardest hit by foreclosures in 2008 include Nevada, California, Arizona, Michigan, Florida, and Colorado. Adding to these concerns, a new study released by Harvard University says the U.S. housing market is the worst in 50 years. The study notes the mortgage market meltdown, steep rise in foreclosures, the decline of new home construction, falling home prices, and mounting job losses have all converged to make recovery from the current real estate climate more difficult in the days ahead. You should know that there are some options out there for a refinance in Nevada.

If you are looking to buy a home, you may want to explore these 5 states to find house prices lower than they have been in the past. Arizona ? Home prices may be down 13% in the Grand Canyon State, but there are a lot of other great things that this state has going for it. The weather is beautiful and the state offers diverse living options. If you are young and looking for a hip, urban environment, check out Tempe ? home of Arizona State University. If you are looking for a more rural setting but still want the convenience of being near the city, look for homes in Casa Grande, referred to as ?The Heart of Arizona?.

Individuals who don?t have time to shop around for best refinance rates might want to use the services of a Mortgage broker. It is important to work with brokers well-established within the lending industry, as they are swiftly able to locate suitable lenders.

Talk with counselors of national programs such as HOPE NOW. It is an alliance between lenders, credit and mortgage counselors, and investors. HOPE NOW can assist distressed homeowners by providing streamline measures and options to prevent foreclosure.

Utah ? If you love to ski, you can?t beat Utah. And with housing prices down 8.9% you may not be able to beat the deals you can find here either. Utah is also a great place to live. The cities of Ogden-Clearfield & Provo-Orem were featured in the number 2 & 3 spots on the Forbes.com Most Livable Cities list. Falling house prices can provide great opportunities for those looking to buy their first home or refinance. If you are looking for a refinance in Nevada or any of these states, don?t delay. Report: 15% of Americans on food stamps

Christian Science Monitor / Getty Images

A record number of Americans are using this food stamp card to purchase groceries these days.

By Jeff Cox, cnbc.com

?The number of Americans on food stamps hit a record high in June, and economists don't expect much improvement as long as unemployment remains high.

Those receiving benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program numbered 46.37 million, the government announced in a report that hit just days ahead of the monthly nonfarm payrolls report, which the Labor Department releases Friday.

?The two numbers are inextricably linked as the economy battles its way back from the crippling recession that the National Bureau of Economic Research says ended in 2009.

CNBC.com: America?s ?nanny state? laws

?"The unemployment data is not really telling us the true story of how many people are underemployed," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital in New York. Food stamps are "a good indication of how the income of the work force has stagnated and more and more people are applying for food stamps."

?With 22.4 million households using food stamps, fully 15 percent of the American population is on the program. The costs, at $6.025 billion for the month, are just off the all-time record though the average monthly benefit per person has declined modestly to $132.96.

While the unemployment rate actually has come down from the 10 percent readings it showed in 2009, the number of participants for the SNAP program has soared.

CNBC.com: Here?s the truth: Every politician wants to raise your taxes

There were fewer than 31 million people on food stamps as recently as November 2008, but an aggressive effort by President Obama's administration has helped build participation, with the total increasing by 44 percent since the president took office in January 2009.

Liberal commentator Alan Colmes, in a Wall Street Journal op-ed piece Tuesday, cites the expansion as a key achievement of the Obama administration, as participants "only stay on it an average of nine months" and circulate $1.73 back into the economy for each food stamp dollar spent.

But if Cardillo is correct and the proliferation of food stamp recipients represents underemployment and wage stagnation, that could signal difficult times ahead for reducing entitlement spending. Cardillo said just 90,000 new jobs were formed in August, and the unemployment rate level was at 8.3 percent.

CNBC.com: Too much debt talk from Paul Ryan

Citigroup economist Steven C. Wieting, in a recent analysis, said there are more than 3 million Americans still without work who lost their jobs following the financial crisis but did not work in the housing-related industries that suffered most.

Consequently, he said in an interview, recovery will be slow in coming as those noncyclical job losses will be more difficult to remedy.

"The economy's growing and it's likely to continue to grow," Wieting said. "But it's three steps back and one step forward, and lots of cyclical improvement in the economy from very depressed lows. But we are very, very far from having normal labor markets."

CNBC.com: Why Niall Furguson is right on Obamacare ? mostly

Indeed, data last week from the National Employment Law Project underscored how far there is to go.

The group found that 58 percent of all jobs created during the past two years paid $13.83 an hour or less while just 22 percent were in the "midwage" class of $13.84 to $21.13 an hour, even though that group lost 60 percent of the jobs during the recession.

"The economy has fewer good jobs now than it did at the start of the 21st century," Annette Bernhardt, policy co-director at the NELP, said in a statement. "Indeed, it?s important to recognize that the U.S. labor market was already in trouble before the Great Recession, the result of 30 years of growing wage inequality and shrinking numbers of good jobs."

Wieting said the economy is "on a path to seven years just to get back to the employment level where you were at the start of the downturn," and suggested the economy is closer to depression than it is to the inflation that would signal sustained growth.

What can families get out of a glamping break? | Family Holiday Guide

What can families get out of a glamping break?

Are you looking to take your children on holiday but are unsure about what type of break will be most suitable? There are certainly plenty of options to choose from, but I think one that both parents and children will be able to get a lot out of is a glamping getaway. Indeed, I believe this is one kind of holiday that people of all ages and interests can enjoy. To find out why this is the case, read on.

As you might have figured out from its name, a glamping break offers a level of luxury that you simply don?t get when on your bog-standard camping holiday. Of course, the particular facilities you get will depend on where exactly you stay ? remember the range of glamping properties available is extremely diverse ? but you can expect to have at least a similar level of comfort to what you?re used to at home.

While this may not be the idea for a dream break for someone like Bear Grylls, it is a fantastic choice for families. Rather than having to try to cook meals over a single camping stove or going a few days without a shower, going on a glamping holiday means you will have access to good-quality kitchen and bathroom facilities.

The latter, you are likely to find, will be particularly useful for children who?ve just spent a day playing in the sea or muddy fields. While kids are usually quite content to be grubby, this is a sentiment that you?re probably not going to share with them. Luckily for you, and perhaps unfortunately for them, booking glamping accommodation means they have no excuses not to have a shower at the end of the day, something that isn?t always the case when on a normal camping holiday.

I think it?s also worth remembering the opportunities that glamping holidays present for you to connect with nature. As such accommodation is usually situated in the heart of the countryside, you?ve got a great chance to escape the bustle and bright lights of big cities and enjoy a much gentler pace of life. This means you?ll have the opportunity to look at night skies that are illuminated with stars, as opposed to streetlamps, and see woodland creatures such as foxes, polecats and badgers in their natural environment.

While you will be provided with everything you need to have a comfortable break, these holidays mean you?ll be kept well away from modern-day distractions like television and the internet, so you?ve got more scope to enjoy quality time with each other. Glamping getaways offer a great opportunity to go on long country walks together, as well as try other outdoor activities such as cycling and fishing. The fact you?re out in the countryside also means that kids will have plenty of space to roam around freely and play without having to worry about traffic or disturbing other people.

Another fantastic advantage to taking a family glamping break is that you can provide children with unique experiences they?ll remember forever. As mentioned before, there is a diverse range of glamping accommodation to choose from ? you could stay in a treehouse or?book a tipi camping site in Pembrokeshire?- but you?ll get to stay somewhere quirky and much more exciting than a run-of-the-mill hotel. In doing so, you and your children are likely to have a great deal more fun.

Are you thinking of going on a family glamping holiday? What kind of accommodation are you hoping to book for you and your children?

Jay-Z mimics Rocky at Philly Made In America fest

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Jay-Z's entrance said it all: He bounced up and down on top of the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, mimicking Rocky before he took the stage in front of nearly 50,000. His song "Made In America" played in the background.

Jay-Z, like Rocky Balboa, has a rags-to-riches American dream story, and the 42-year-old entertainer ? who grew up in the Brooklyn projects and released his debut album in 1996 ? shared some of that through songs in his 90-minute set Saturday night at the Budweiser Made In America festival.

He entered from the back of the stage after running down the steps to perform "Public Service Announcement." That was followed with the night's first cameo: a prerecorded video with President Barack Obama.

Obama urged the crowd to vote this fall. He also said Jay-Z's story is "what Made In America means" and added that he enjoys listening to the rapper's music on his iPod.

Jay-Z headlined the first night of the two-day festival he curated, performing hits like "99 Problems," ''Dirt Off Your Shoulder," ''Big Pimpin'" and "Empire State of Mind."

The event is the first of its kind for the entrepreneurial Jay-Z, who is married to superstar Beyonce and owns a music management company, fashion line, nightclub and restaurant; he's also a co-owner of the Brooklyn Nets.

"Since you were so good to me, Philly, I'm going to be good to you tonight, Philly," Jay-Z yelled.

Rappers Pusha T and Big Sean hit the stage, and Kanye West followed, receiving an electrifying roar from the crowd. They performed a medley of hits, such as "Mercy," ''Dance" and "Can't Tell Me Nothing."

Jay-Z also brought out his former prot?g?s and Philadelphians Freeway, Chris and Neff, as well as Memphis Bleek. Common, 2 Chainz and Swizz Beatz also made appearances.

The scene was colorful and energetic, as thousands of music fans shifted from the three stages on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to watch Skrillex, D'Angelo, Passion Pit, Janelle Monae, Calvin Harris and 10 other acts. Sunday's line-up includes Pearl Jam, Run DMC, Odd Future and Drake, who was in the crowd Saturday night.

The festival is being filmed as a documentary and will be directed by Ron Howard. Proceeds from the ticketed event will benefit United Way chapters.

Jay-Z closed the night with West, performing the smash hit "...In Paris." Then fireworks blasted.
